Making the Team Meter 4
MTM number four this week. The Braves continue to win games this spring and several young infielders are really starting to stand out - will that translate into them making the team? Added to the MTM this week is Macay McBride. His struggles have me doubting wheather or not he's guranteed a roster spot. Will Startup got into a game and picked up the only Braves save of the spring with a perfect inning. The pitching lineup for today's game should be one to watch (or listen to), with Mike Gonzalez, Rafael Soriano, and Bob Wickman all throwing an inning.
| Player, Position | Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kelly Johnson, 2B |
![]() |
He's starting to find his stroke and he's still spotless in the field. |
| Gregor Blanco, OF |
![]() |
Mark Bowman gets the feeling that Blanco's stock is a lot lower than many of us thought. He's also not doing that well in the early going. |
| T.J. Bohn, OF |
![]() |
Has not yet begun to hit, just 2-for-17 so far. |
| Pete Orr, INF |
|
Cox is not ruling out Pete from winning the second base job or a backup position. Also, with Woodward still on the shelf Orr gets even more playing time to try and impress and earn a spot. |
| Brayan Pena, C |
![]() |
He hasn't gotten into many games, but he's doing what he needs to do to earn the backup job. |
| Tony Pena, SS |
![]() |
He's sporting a no-extra-base-hit batting average of .313 this spring, but that's what you get with TPJ. |
| Martin Prado, INF |
|
He is apparently adding to his value by spending some time in left field this spring, where Cox has some solid praise for him. He's still hitting a robust .571 too. |
| Yunel Escobar, SS |
|
Cox raved about his "offensive and defensive capabilities." As he continues to hit this spring his chances of making the team continue to rise, even DOB thinks so. Of course which team he makes is another question. Escobar is improving his value as a trading chip and other teams may go after him harder than they did this winter. |
| Brent Lillibridge, SS |
|
He thinks he's ready for the majors right now. A mindset like that could go a long way towards helping his confidence. |
| Corky Miller, C |
![]() |
Corky. |
| Carlos Mendez, 1B |
![]() |
When he's been in the lineup he's hit. He leads the team with two doubles. |
| Doug Clark, OF |
![]() |
He has not received much playing time, only five at-bats. |
| Willie Harris, OF |
|
Willie is making his bid to make the team. One asset he has that none of the other utility candidates have is speed and the ability to use it on the basepaths. I'm going to up his chances to even. |
| Kyle Davies, RHP |
![]() |
His second start of the spring did not go as smoothly as his first. Mark Bowman tells us that Davies was comfortable throwing out of the windup, but had all sorts of problem throwing from the stretch. With Cormier performing well early in spring, Davies will really have to step it up and prove to everyone that he's ready. |
| Anthony Lerew, RHP |
![]() |
I'm changing his chances to the down arrow. He's not getting in games like he should be and he's been roughed up both times. |
| Lance Cormier, RHP |
![]() |
He had an excellent outing on Monday, going three innings and only allowing a walk and a hit. His stock continues to rise. |
| Manny Acosta, RHP |
![]() |
He's thrown well this spring, and he's controlling his walks. |
| Jose Ascanio, RHP |
![]() |
He'll probably be among the first round of cuts. |
| Blaine Boyer, RHP |
|
A solid first outing this spring in his road back from injury. |
| Joey Devine, RHP |
![]() |
It's looking more and more like he'll open the season in Richmond, even though he threw two solid innings on Tuesday. |
| Jonathan Johnson, RHP |
![]() |
Another not so great outing, surrendering three runs on four hits and a walk in three IP. He also hit a batter. |
| Macay McBride, RHP |
|
After his second rough outing this spring, I'm putting him on the MTM. If he can't straighten out his troubles he may find himself back at Richmond. |
| Peter Moylan, RHP |
|
He's been solid this spring. |
| Chad Paronto, RHP |
![]() |
He has added a circle change this year and his ability to use it in games is already impressing Cox and company. There's no reason to think he won't snag one of the remaining bullpen spots. |
| Phil Stockman, RHP |
![]() |
Still hasn't made it into a game. |
| Tyler Yates, RHP |
![]() |
He's given up some hits and walks this spring and he's only struck out one in three innings. Perhpas it's taking him longer to get his velocity up that some of the others. |
| Kevin Barry, RHP |
![]() |
He continues to throw well this spring, but all that may earn him is consideration for a callup sometime this summer. |
| Buddy Carlyle, RHP |
![]() |
Four innings, four strikeouts, no runs, no walks, and only three hits. He looks pretty good. |
| Steve Colyer, RHP |
![]() |
Two decent outings, but I can't get a read on these non-roster guys. Do they even have a chance. |
| Matt Harrison, RHP |
![]() |
Harrison got hammered by the Nats - four earned in one inning including a three-run homerun. |
Key:
-- = Chance of making the team is even.
= Chance of making the team is going down.
= Chance of making the team is going up.
