Making the Team Meter 3

Here we are with the third edition of the MTM this spring. Games have started so these will now be a twice weekly occurrence. There is also some more imitation of the MTM out there, this time at Future Fish. All stats and stories linked to are current through Saturday, March 2nd.

Player, Position Chance Notes
Kelly Johnson, 2B
Worked a walk in his first game, then stole a base. Isn't that the job of a leadoff hitter?
Gregor Blanco, OF
He's not getting much playing time, so I think his chances of making the team are a bit more diminished than we thought before spring games started.
T.J. Bohn, OF
Not doing much to stand out here in early spring.
Pete Orr, INF
With Aybar not yet in camp and Woodward sitting out with a strained calf muscle, Orr could have more opportunities this spring to show that he belongs on the opening day roster.
Brayan Pena, C
He comes out of the gate hitting. He was 2-for-2 in his first game. It also appears that Brayan will be assigned to catch Kyle Davies this season. A good indication that his spot on the team is a little more secure than I first thought.
Tony Pena, SS
He's supposed to be a defense first kind of guy, and making errors will not help his chances.
Martin Prado, INF
He's hitting well early in camp, but Johnson's been getting the starts. The fact that Kelly is handling second base early in the spring is hurting Prado's chances.
Yunel Escobar, SS
--
He's picking up right where he left off in the AFL. If he keeps this up he may be hard to overlook.
Brent Lillibridge, SS
He's showing some good speed on the basepaths this spring. Could he make the club as a backup infielder slash pinch runner? The Braves are sorely lacking in team speed so adding Lilli to the roster might be something they are considering. Because of that I say his chances are now going up.
Corky Miller, C
Hitting-wise, Franco and Pena have been doing better than the Corkster.
Carlos Mendez, 1B
After seeing him in the game on Friday, he looks rather oldish.
Doug Clark, OF
He's a tall fellow as I found out while watching the game on Friday.
Willie Harris, OF
He hasn't stood out yet.
Kyle Davies, RHP
Very good first start, two scoreless innings.
Anthony Lerew, RHP
With three hits, an earned run, and three strikeouts it was a decent first outing.
Lance Cormier, RHP
He gets a huge boost by being in the rotation for exhibition games this spring. If Hampton is slowed this spring and can't start the season in the rotation, then Cormier will take his spot. He got knocked around in his first spring appearance.
Manny Acosta, RHP
Spotless inning in his first spring appearance.
Jose Ascanio, RHP
A spotless first outing, but he got touched up for a home run in his second outing.
Blaine Boyer, RHP
--
He injured the middle finger on his pitching hand while he was having some marital difficulty.
Joey Devine, RHP
--
Nice first outing, 2 SO's and 1 hit in 1 IP. But then he goes out there the second time and hits two batters! This may be a sign that he is not ready yet. His chances of making the team are still even.
Jonathan Johnson, RHP
So we finally find out who this guy is. And apparently he has a shot at making the opening day roster in the bullpen - otherwise he will retire. For me, though, the jury is still out on wheather or not he's major league material. Even after praise from Cox and McDowell, his odds are still going down after a rough first outing in which he allowed five hits.
Peter Moylan, RHP
--
He looked okay in his two innings of work on Friday. He's not overpowering anyone out there.
Chad Paronto, RHP
Despite a hit, he had a good first spring appearance.
Phil Stockman, RHP
Still rehabbing.
Tyler Yates, RHP
Despite a walk, he had a good first spring appearance.
Kevin Barry, RHP
Even though it was against college batters, four strikeouts in two innings is a good way to open the spring.
Buddy Carlyle, RHP
Two hits, two strikeouts, in two innings, not bad, but is he impressing the skipper?
Steve Colyer, RHP
A perfect first spring inning.
Matt Harrison, RHP
--
Good first start, though it was against college kids.

Key:
-- = Chance of making the team is even.
= Chance of making the team is going down.
= Chance of making the team is going up.

RE: Bohn
He's going to be nothing more than a AAA guy, with maybe just maybe a September call up.

He did nothing in the Seattle System to stand out from the rest. What you've seen, is well what your going to get with Bohn.

Yeah
I was baffled as to why we picked him up in the first place. I think Seattle and Atlanta made some sort of the deal in which they would trade half of their organization to the other this off-season. Perhaps it is a consequence of each team scouting the other's system.

Yeah no kidding...
We've got Jamal Strong last year (towards the start of '06 as well). Last I saw he was playing in Richmond, he too is another not so important AAA filler Outfield Guy.

We've already got a ton of OF'ers to begin with. So Bohn will most likely play in Richmond, until they figure out he's crap and toss him to the curb. Or just let him be filler.

He comes off kinda lazy really.

Ugh
I hate it when I don't proof.

Jamal Strong was also another Seattle System guy.

Names Listed
Are the players listed in any particular order when ranking their chances of making the team?

I listed...
... the 40-man roster people first, hitters then pitchers, then I listed the non-roster people. I sort of took the list off of my "your 2007 Braves" listing on the left sidebar.

Willie Harris
I don't know about every one else, but watching the game on ESPN, it seemed to me that Willie Harris was all over the field.

I haven't been keeping up on box scores or anything, but in that particular game he was 0 for 2 but managed to score twice, and made some great plays at second, a line-drive double play and a jump-throw to first from deep behind the second base bag.

I came away surprised that Willie Harris would be the player who left the biggest impression on me.

re: Harris
Yeah he's Richmond's Utility Guy.

But that's about all I know about Mr. Harris.
