Monday Notes

The Braves high-A minor league affiliate, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, have a new logo.

New Logo:

Old Logo:

I especially like the background picture on their redesigned web site; that pelican's eyes look a bit demented.

Here are some tidbits from the SportsXchange:

  • RHP Tim Hudson had his wisdom teeth pulled, a preventive measure calculated to prevent disrupting the season.

  • LHP Mike Gonzalez doesn't care what inning he pitches, but when asked whether he sees himself as a closer responded, "There's no doubt in my mind. That's what I do."

  • RHP Tyler Yates needed offseason weight training only for his legs; his arms, shoulders and back get enough of a workout from surfing.

  • RHP Kyle Davies believes he'll be more comfortable on the mound this season. "Sometimes I felt like I was worrying too much," he says of how he pitched last year.

  • Manager Bobby Cox will assign one of his five starters to be caught by backup C Brayan Pena, but he hasn't decided which one yet.
*************

The Braves have finally signed their only remaining arbitration eligible player, Oscar Villarreal. He agreed to a one-year, $925,000 contract Sunday, and could make another $100,000 in bonuses. Here is the interesting bonus structure:

Villarreal gets three points for each start and one point for every game he finishes. He would receive $25,000 bonuses for reaching 30, 39, 48 and 60 points.

Smoltz divorce
This better not effect his performance.

Inappropriate
maybe you should try rephrasing yourself so your comments don't come off so "assholish".  i would try, "i hope this doesnt affect his performance".   how disrespectful. smoltz has been as loyal to the braves as anyone. his personal life is none of your business, and your comment is way out of line.  gondee, personal comments of this nature, that no way have anything to do with the game of baseball, should not be tolerated on the site.  i enjoy this site, but that comment should be deleted.

Well
If it gets out of hand I'll put a stop to it, but for the most part that sort of inappropriateness is seen for what it is by others who read the comments. If he wants to continue to represent himself that way, then let him. But by leaving it up there (and with your reaction, which is totally appropriate) perhaps he and others who might think along those lines will learn that sort of talk is not proper.

I have not commented on the Smoltz divorce for the simple reason that, to me, it has nothing to do with the Braves or my enjoyment of baseball. It's personal and it should remain as such.

clarification
thank you gondee.  as ron burgandy says, "you're so wise...like a miniature buddha covered in hair." my reaction was probably a little extreme, but i would bet that some of the players keep up with the site. and knowing the competitor that smoltz is, i would bet he is one of them.  i know he wouldnt appreciate that personal tongue lashing.  thanks again.
