Oh Man, we made THAT Trade?
Via MLBTR:
Well, like I said this morning, I'm not too thrilled by the acquisition of Ohman. Infante is a 26-year old backup shortstop, so in him we get an average defender who can also play the outfield. He's no frills, but he at least might be better than Woodward was last year.
In Ascanio the Braves lose a young hard thrower, but one who was probably on the bubble as to whether he would make the bullpen next year. A guy like Ascanio can be considered trading from a position of strength, since we have plenty of young unproven bullpen arms. The fact that we filled two needs with this trade also makes it easier to swallow.
Here is more on the trade from Ken Rosenthal:
We can afford the salary, and quite frankly we should be spending a bit more on our bullpen and our bench.
Update [2007-12-4 11:23:55 by gondeee]:
In thinking more about this, the Braves will have to clear another spot on their 40-man roster as they are only subtracting Ascanio and adding OhMan and Omar. I wonder if this means another trade to subtract a Thorman or someone else, while we acquire a prospect. Of course, I thought for sure we’d trade Thorman at the trading deadline this year when we got Tex, but that didn’t happen, so who knows if Thor is headed elsewhere or if someone else will be sacrificed.
Update [2007-12-4 13:14:36 by gondeee]:
Dave O'Brien says the team is going to designate Willie Harris for assignment, and that he is likely to make it through waivers without getting claimed.

I'd do it...
Ascanio had no chance of making the team next year the way it stands now. Too many guys like Devine and Yates are out of options.
Infante did start 10 games in CF for the Tigers last year, giving the Braves another option there. If nothing else, he's an instant upgrade over Woodward.
In essence, Jacque Jones and Ohman netted the Cubs a minor league relief pitcher.

yeah
We get a lefty reliever who I'm betting will be above average (Bobby is really pretty good about using LOOGYs well)- I'd guess that Ohman's '08 ERA is 3.19.
And all of this for a guy that wouldn't have made the team next year? C'mon.

Well...
Since we were able to fill two needs using one guy, that means that were are able to have just that many more pieces if we are going to make a move for a CF. I think that the Dejesus to us and Chuck James to them idea will pick up steam today, and maybe we can add in throman to get a low level prospect. Just an idea, but cannot wait to see what happens. All in All, nice trade.

Not bad
Also, I like Chuck James. I think he is a solid #4 in the current rotation. I also think this supposed strength of the Braves is an aberration. BUT, to net a David DeJesus for him would be very nice for the Braves. Maybe I'm more bullish on him than most people, but I think DeJesus would step right in and produce pretty damn good numbers in this lineup. Be it the 1-2 spot or 7 hole.
Make it happen Frank!!

James for Dejesus
I do think that James is a little above average, especially for a bottom of the rotation starter. But I also beleive we have seen the best of Chuck James. First off he is around 26 years old and if he hasn't even begun to develop a third pitch by now I don't think its gonna happen. Second, he had shoulder trouble this year....some would say "fatigue", I think the Braves see this as a warning sign and would like to unload him while he still has some value left.
Anyone that has ever played baseball or pitched understands that the way Chuck throws the ball is all arm/shoulder, he doesn't use his legs and there is little or no follow through at all, thus creating a tremendous strain on his shoulder/arm. This way of pitching leads to a couple of problems:
- If you don't use your legs and follow through, your arm tires more quickly which leads to getting rocked in the later innings as well as "shoulder fatigue" later in the year (both of which we witnessed this year).
- Not following through has a direct effect on the flight of the ball that you are throwing, which means if you aren't following through it is harder to keep the ball down. And if you don't keep the ball down, you give up 50+ homeruns in 280 innings.
- All of this strain you are putting on your shoulder will catch up to you eventually and your career will not last that long. Look at Roger Clemens, he uses about 80% legs when he pitches, James uses about 10%.
So because of this I say Wren should get Dejesus now, because after another 20 or 30 homerun season we may be lucky to get a Chris Woodward for Chucky.

Are you serious?
Jesus I hope not: Willie Harris is a drain on any major league team, especially if he is placed in a starting role. I hate the idea of Josh Anderson starting for the Atlanta Braves, but if nothing else he would be an upgrade over Willie Harris.
In other words: Willie Harris is a horrible major-league baseball player.

He was "designated for assignment", so
There's no reason for Willie to come back to the Braves since they've made it clear he's not in their plans for 2008. If he still has any dreams of being a starter, he'll go elsewhere.
