Winter Meetings Open Thread: Day 1

I'll post these each day so we can add any interesting tidbits we find around the web, or just talk about the activity or lack there of, though, I think we'll have some level of activity. We are apparently shopping for a lefty setup man and a backup shortstop, as well as perhaps an upgrade in centerfield if one should materialize. Here is some of the early buzz and "pre-stories":

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says that we were interested in center fielder Chris Duffy last year as part of the LaRoche deal:

The Atlanta Braves had pressed hard for Duffy to be included in the Adam LaRoche trade last spring, only to settle for an exchange of prospects. They just lost Andruw Jones through free agency and have no internal replacement ready.

Duffy has been discussed by some Braves fans on this site and others, but he's not much more of a desirable option than the players we already have scheduled to compete for the center field spot.

Buster Olney over at ESPN stirred the pot the other day when he said this, which is less of a rumor than a columnist thinking out loud:

Have heard that the Nats are pushing to trade Chad Cordero, and it makes sense for the Braves to be involved in conversations for a reliever.

I don't know that we would be in on Cordero. We just don't need him.

It will also be interesting to see if a market actually materializes for Andruw Jones. Many folks think that he will eventually wind up in Dodger blue, but still other sources say Rowand is higher on their priority list.

I'm sure David O'Brien over at the AJC will "file" a new blog with any updates about the goings-on at the winter meetings today. So I'll put that link up and try to highlight the important parts while leaving out any references to motorcycles, cigars, Nashville area diners, music lyrics, or any other ego-stroking that may crop up.

Why not ...
let the best man standing win the CF spot in spring training?  I mean let every player who is invited get a shot and not do this development crap with our younger players.  Throw them in there.  Not like we are expected to win the NL East.

Also ...
If Hampton has another set back I would not count on him being healthy to play.

Right now we got these starting pitchers for sure:

John Smoltz
Tim Hudson
Tom Glavine

We need a 4 and 5 starter.  I'm guessing Jurrgens or Reyes are the best options but would it hurt to trade for another quality (3-4) starter type pitcher?

Chuckie James
How soon people forget that he posted a league average ERA in an off year where he was hurt.

I like
James but would love to improve more at the starting pitching area.

After thinking about it James might be better than Glavine at this point in their careers.  Any thoughts?

I'd agree
James still has four (?) seasons left under our exclusive control signed relatively cheap. He's a league average ERA guy who has the potential to go deeper into ball games if he ever develops a good third pitch. Definitely has more upside than Glavine, and less downside.

eh
thats debatable. He might have better numbers, but glavine threw harder when he was younger and probably had better location.

But James would be an excellent 4th starter right now.

Duffy
I just really do not see the braves having much interest in chris duffy, as they already have made a move for a similar player in josh anderson. However, I can definitely see duffy being part of a deal that would also include marte or grabow, as the braves have definitely made it known they are looking for a lefty reliever. If that were the case, the braves and pirates could definitely have something to talk about. I will admit, while we may not have that much interest, it would not be the end of the world to acquire duffy.

Also...
From Ken Rosenthal's column:

The Braves' long-standing interest in Coco Crisp has cooled due to their desire for only a one-year stopgap in center field -- Crisp is signed for $4.75 million next season and $5.75 million in 2009. Free agent Corey Patterson, a native of Atlanta, could be a fit, but the Braves are content to go with some combination of Gregor Blanco, Josh Anderson and Jordan Schafer next season.

Coco has been mentioned many times, but not so much Corey Patterson. It's something anyway.

It sounds more and more like were are settled
Mark Bowman over at mlb.com has been pointing out the same thing that the braves are confident in what we have at the present time, even though i really think we should still try to get someone who can have for the whole year that will give us the best chance to win it all next year, as our team is very much competitive to be a contender, but it may just be for 08 with uncertainty surrounding Teix, Glavine, Smoltz and so on after next year.

Resigning
Tex would be my number goal DURING the season if I was the GM.

by taney71 on Dec 3, 2007 12:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No chance
Unless Warren Buffet decides to advise Tex as well, Boras will in no way let the Braves and Tex negotiate during the season, a deal would not be met until next offseason.

ego-stroking
I think the argument can easily be made that using your blog-space to criticize another blogger is much more a case of 'ego-stroking' than using one's blog-space to discuss music or restaurants with one's readers.

I'm just saying..

me too... just saying...
Blogs were conceived of precisely to be critical of others, and to voice one's opinion. Don't misread my comment to think that I'm not guilty of exactly what I'm pointing out in another, but I still feel I'm obligated to point out when a blog becomes more about one person's ego than about a forum for good information and informed discussion.

Duffy??? Cordero???
Duffy is an absolutely horrible hitter.  He has a .268/.328/.361 line through 681 major league AB.  He'll be 28 next season and I doubt he'll live up to whatever promise he showed in the minors.  I agree that our "non-existant" interbal options are already better than Chris.

Cordero is not even the best RP on his own team.  On opening day, I think we'll have Soriano, Moylan, Acosta, Devine, Yates, Resop and a lefty in the bullpen.

Come check out my blog 52 Card Pick-up and let me know what you think!

is it just me
or is anyone else not that excited about the return of glavine. there were points last year when i truly thought he was as hittable as ever. to tell you the truth, i was excited for the Braves to matchup with Glavine at points last year cuz it was a chance for some stat padding for my Braves heavy fantasy team to occur. the only hope i hold for him next year is the motivation of returning to the braves and having smoltz around, but is that enough to be content?

hopefully james can return to his '06 form and hold up the 3 spot, with jurrgens hopefully being able to excell enough during the season to pass glavine for that 4 spot. then glavine will be at home

Me too
the signing of Glavine isn't doing it for me.  Would have been nice to have the guy five years ago when he still was pretty good most of the time.

by taney71 on Dec 3, 2007 8:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest
I'm not sure his signing was worth the 1st round pick to the Mets...If it had been a 1st round pick to any other team I might be ok with it, but the Mets???

by Hizilla on Dec 3, 2007 10:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

actually...
the mets are fairly inept...in that respect, i dont mind giving them a pick...if we're going to give a pick to a team, give it to someone who wont use it properly..
