Javy's Back! .....maybe

Ladies, get ready to gawk at backup catchers once again, crowd favorite and heart throb Javy Lopez is back with the Braves and has a chance to be Brian McCann's backup next year. The details:

The Braves signed their popular former catcher to a minor league free-agent contract with an invitation to spring training, where the 37-year-old will attempt a comeback and try to win a backup job behind Brian McCann.

Lopez hasn't played since being released by Colorado during 2007 spring training, but the Braves think the three-time former All-Star might have enough left to give them a power bat off the bench.

There was some speculation that Javy might be returning to the Braves. I don't know how effective he will be, but even in his declining years in Baltimore he kept his power number at a somewhat respectable level. The Orioles really dealt him a losing hand when they signed Ramon Hernandez to be their catcher, basically relegating Javy to other positions in the last year of his contract. He tried playing first base that year with very little success, so keep in mind he is strictly a catcher and bench bat. We'll have to see if his bat speed is good enough to come off the bench two or three times a week and still be effective at 37 years old.

We also find out the names of the other minor league free agents we signed. Competing with Javy Lopez and rookie Clint Sammons for the backup catching spot will be J.C. Boscan and the returning Corky Miller. Outfielder Joe Borchard, right-hander Jorge Campillo, and infielder Javier Guzman round out the signings with all players getting invites to spring training.

Campillo made one appearance on November 29th for Culiacan in the Mexican Pacific League this winter, going two innings allowing two hits, no runs, and striking out a batter. The switch hitting third baseman, Javier Guzman, is hitting .224/.245/.265 in 21 games (49 AB) in the Dominican this winter. He’s a real long shot to make the club.

Joe Borchard? THE Joe Borchard? Remember was he was an UBER-PROSPECT? I'm more excited about him than I am about Javy.

You know
he can play centerfield too...he's been a below average hitter his entire career so I'm not suggesting he will be anything special.

Just a neat guy to invite.

reward
Wren and Schuerholz must be rewarding Javy for not being in the Mitchell report. (Now if only he could get in touch with Roger Clemens on some geriatric conditioning.)

Guzman
I like three guys out of the how many signings.  Borcard if he can produce anything close to his MINOR league stats i think we found something.  Campillo has pitched better as a starter than in relief not saying he'll be any good though.  And Guzman played in the ARZ fall league at AGE 14,14,14 what is that? Insane or what?  He's still only 23.  He could still improve.  Do they have to make it on the 25 man roster or sign a minor league deal.  I would definitley question Wren if he made a major league deal with Lopez.  Since its a minor league deal no bigge.

Borcahrd
Yep. Joe Boarchard. THE Joe Borchard. He of the .196 batting average, .287 on base percentage, and .313 slugging percentage.

10 bucks says that fans of some other team will a year from now  bec shocked to find out that their team invited joe Borchard to Spring Training.

But who knows? He might pull a Willie Harris and provide us a few useful months.
