Steroid Bombshell Open Thread

It's coming today, some is already leaking out, and the commissioner is being quite frank about it:

"People can say Bud was just trying to cover his butt or take care of his legacy or whatever," Selig said, according to the Tribune. "I say [bleep] it. This needed to be done, and now we've done it. I'm just happy it will be out there and we can move on. I'm proud of it."

That won't be the only expletive uttered around the baseball world today.

The reports is officially released at 2pm today with syringe to syringe coverage at the World Wide Leader.

Any Braves?
I think we've done this before and I know it's unprofessional and all to speculate wildly, but this is a blog...

Anyone think any Braves will be on it? Anyone linked to the Braves past or present?

Braves on list
We KNOW Murph won't be on it. Time for the Hall of Fame to set things right and get Murph and Dawson in where they belong.

Go Murphy!!
A major injustice he isn't in.  I call bullshit on those who don't vote for his inclusion.

What a waste of time...
...and money. Mitchell isn't credible what with his ties to the Red Sox. What a shock that Yankee names were leaked before any others. That doesn't look bad or anything... According to Buster Olney 100 players tested positive in 2003 alone...and this report names 60-80 players? Ignore the 80's (Canseco) and 90's (McGwire, Sosa, Caminiti et al) and you still have more guys than the report names. This is a total sham.

wow!
injuries or ill tempers describe almost every one of the players named.  coincidence? i think not.
on another note, prior and jason lane have been non-tendered.  lane could be a decent stopgap in center (and if he didnt work out, he would be an ideal 4th outfielder).  i would love to see wren aggresively go after prior.

past braves
I would say Marcus Giles. I could be wrong but you asked 8)

Braves
I could see Andruw being on the list!

Chipper
I always thought Chipper Juiced. Especially when he put up those monstrous numbers for a couple seasons and then started getting hurt. Seems a little fishy to me.

ew
I was dreading this so much, but he's not on the preliminary list, so I've still got my fingers crossed.

by bigjoe on Dec 13, 2007 1:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Andruw
If he juiced, he's the worst user of all time. He's still chubby and it didn't help.

Anyway, if that list is credible and truthful, wow, all I can say. I've follow baseball all my life and I've seen a lot of wild things (the 94 strike, Ripken, McGwire, etc.). But this is just so shocking. There are players on there who I fully expected, but Andy Pettite? Really? Wally Joyner? Rich Garces? C'mon.

I don't know what to say, I am at a loss.

SI reports...
...David Justice is on the list.  That really makes me sad, as he is tied closely to one of my fondest memories from childhood.

Checks
Those copies of checks are pretty damning evidence.

David Justice
It says he did it as a Yankee, after he was a member of the braves.

Also I am checking the report right now:

Pujols is not in it
Kerry Wood is not listed
Prior is not listed
Jason Varitek is not listed
Pudge is not listed
Darrly Kile is not listed
Garciaparra is not listed

none of these guys are listed in the report, that Jeremy L dude is wrong

espn
also reported fernando vina...not sure if it was while in atlanta

by Doghnut on Dec 13, 2007 3:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But is there anything better
than Paul LoDuca being on the list.

I hate that guy.  Shoulda known he juiced.

Go Braves!

Yup...
...I couldn't help but snicker when I saw his name.  Can't stand him.

Willie Harris to Nats
How many OFs do they have now?

by TradeAndruw on Dec 13, 2007 3:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

former braves
they are probably in all likelyhood directly tied to Radomski, considering the Braves saw him far more often than most other teams.

but cmon some of the names that jumped out to me:
Denny Neagle!
Kent Mercker
Fernando Vina
John Rocker
David Justice

Im just happy that no current Braves were on the list, therefore not compromising next year's team.

overall im glad im not a yankees fan or an Astros fan (how much worse does that Tejada trade look now).

by MIZIKE74 on Dec 13, 2007 4:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Braves
Braves players that used:

Denny Neagle
Kent Mercker
John Rocker
David Justice
Todd Pratt
Matt Franco
Mike Stanton
Darren Holmes
Paul Byrd

Fortunately, it looks like most of them used after they left the Braves.  I think that Paul Byrd (2004) was the only one who used while on the team.

Oh, and Pascual Perez used cocaine in the 80's, but i think we all knew that.

Darren Holmes...
I could see him drinking the stuff in pre-game warmups.

Clemens
I'm so glad his name showed up, I freakin' hate that guy!

by iLukeisamazing on Dec 13, 2007 7:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Lol, this is crazy...

Yes this whole thing...
It kind of makes me mad because baseball rode the effects of steriods, the massive offensive output, to help them patchup the wounds left behind from the '94 strike, and they were just going to continue to ignore it until it got out of hand, Bonds, and then when they were called out on it, BALCO, they then decided it was the worst thing ever and tried to be the hero in a tragedy they created.

Peter Gammons did a nice job of summing up the way to react to this, it is now apart of baseball history, actions have been taking to ensure it will not happen again, and the sport should just keep moving on.

It is kind of funny, but Mcgwires's whole statement at the COngressional hearing now is actually a very good mindset for MLB concerning this subject, as they should, "Not talk about the past, but make a positive step towards the future."

Houston escape?
Four former Braves: David Justice, Kent Mercker, Mike Stanton, Denny Neagle.  They all used (or got caught anyway) well after they left Atlanta.

I'm wondering if the Astros can somehow use this report to get out of the Tejada deal.

by salasks on Dec 13, 2007 11:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No way
The case against Tejada in the report is one of the weaker ones. There is evidence, including signed checks and such, linking some players to the purchases of HGH and steroids, but the only thing implicating Tejada is a conversation between Adam Piatt and Rudomski that said the drugs were for Tejada. Rudomski never spoke to or sold Tejada drugs. Without actual evidence there's no way to pursue a case, even if you could (and I don't even see how they could as Tejada was not employed by the Astros during the alledged steroid use).
