Friday Braves Notes
Let's start with Tom Galvine and the daily dose of journalistic musings we will get from now until the day he signs with someone. The Mets have exclusive rights to negotiate with number 47 until November 12th - so remember that date and know that the articles on Glavine to Atlanta will really heat up around then. Now, that doesn't mean that the Braves can't "talk" to Glavine, they just can't talk financial or contract terms (i.e. negotiate). Let's hope the Braves don't repeat the mistake of last year when then apparently didn't even give Glavine or his agent a ring, and he felt shunned and went back to the Mets. Pick up the phone Frank, and give him a call if you haven't already.
The best reason I can come up with for Glavine to come back to the Braves is this; there's really no reason for him to go back to the Mets, and if he can come back to the Braves and help us get back to the postseason or even the World Series, then he may erase any of the bad blood that Atlanta fans may have for him. That would cement his legacy as an Atlanta Braves pitcher, overshadowing just about anything he did in a Mets uniform, save for his 300th win (of course, isn't that all he did in a Mets uniform).
The Tigers should have waited to make the Renteria trade as they recently lost their closer Joel Zumaya to shoulder surgery which was necessary after he injured himself moving out of his house. Keeping the Atlanta-Detroit connection, the Tigers may go after Braves reliever Octavio Dotel, if Atlanta, as they are expected to do, decline his 2008 $5.5 million option. The Detroit Free Press had this to say:
They are apparently in on several other free agent closers as well, but they certainly traded away some of their minor league trade bait to us to fill their shortstop need, thus limiting their options when it comes to acquiring a replacement closer.
A possible beat writer / columnist feud might be brewing over at the AJC as beat writer David O'Brien completely dismisses any notion of Ken Griffey Jr. coming to the Braves - the exact opposite of what columnist Terance Moore said yesterday:
Just more proof that Moore is an idiot and should not be published in anything north of a pamphlet.
The man/horse/man who just won't go away, Barry Bonds, says he will boycott the Hall of Fame if they display the ball with the asterisk branded on it:
"I don't think you can put an asterisk in the game of baseball, and I don't think that the Hall of Fame can accept an asterisk," Bonds said. "You cannot give people the freedom, the right to alter history. You can't do it. There's no such thing as an asterisk in baseball."
Most of you know how I feel about this guy, so is there really any point in saying what a winy little egomaniacal asshole he is. Yes, there is value in saying it, I feel a little better now.

Why don't we move Harris to center and sign Bonds?

My thoughts...
Anyway, time has passed, and I honsetly think I would be on the front row giving Glavine a standing ovation if he pitches in Atlanta again. He's been nothing but a classy individual since his departure, and it would be great to have him back.
2. Barry Bonds is a big dumb dummy. Not naturally big, mind you, but big. The dummy is evidently all natural.
