Mariners' Bedard to undergo surgery

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Seattle Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder September 26, the team announced Tuesday.
The lefty suffered through hip and back problems this year before experiencing tightness in the shoulder that eventually ended his season. He hit the disabled list July 5 with the shoulder injury, then had several comeback attempts derailed in August. When healthy, Bedard compiled a 6-4 record with a 3.67 earned run average, with 72 strikeouts in 81 innings of work.
The surgery will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who will be removing any non-healthy tissue or foreign material found during the procedure. A timetable for recovery will be announced following the surgery.
"Erik has worked diligently with our medical staff for the past two months attempting to rehabilitate his shoulder without surgery," Mariners general manager Lee Pelekoudas said. "We have determined that surgery is the best course of action at this time."
Bedard was acquired from the Orioles prior to the 2008 campaign in a much- ballyhooed move. Bedard went 13-5 with a 3.16 earned run average and 221 strikeouts in 28 starts with Baltimore in '07.
The 29-year-old has a career mark of 46-38 with a 3.81 ERA in 129 games (126 starts) over six seasons with Baltimore and Seattle.
