Recap: Arizona vs. Cincinnati

Sports Network | September 14, 2008

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Corey Patterson hit the game-winning homer in the 10th inning, as the Cincinnati Reds won in extras for the second straight day over the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-1, at Chase Field.

The Reds had only three hits in the game but made them count, as Jay Bruce drove in the other run with a homer for Cincinnati, which has won five of seven.

Johnny Cueto gave up one run on four hits and six walks in five innings while striking out four. The bullpen pitched five innings of shutout ball, as David Weathers (4-6) got the win for the second consecutive game after pitching a perfect ninth. Francisco Cordero earned his 31st save of the season.

Max Scherzer didn't factor into the decision, allowing one run on two hits and three walks in six innings, with nine strikeouts. Jon Rauch (4-8) took the loss after allowing Patterson's homer. Arizona has now lost eight of nine.

Justin Upton finished the day 4-for-5 with a homer to account for Arizona's only run. The Diamondbacks remained 4 1/2 games behind Los Angeles for the NL West lead after the Dodgers dropped their game with Colorado.

The Reds forged ahead in the 10th inning off Rauch. Patterson worked the count full and blasted a home run off the foul pole in right to give Cincinnati a 2-1 lead.

Cordero came in to save it for the Reds in the home 10th. Augie Ojeda grounded out to lead off, and Miguel Montero struck out. David Eckstein singled to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in Upton, who singled to put runners on the corners. Chris Young, however, struck out swinging to give the Reds the victory.

Bruce hit his 18th home run of the year to lead off the fourth, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead.

Upton tied the game for Arizona, starting the home fifth with his 12th homer of the year.

The Reds win the season series 4-2...Cincy left only four runners on base, while the Diamondbacks left 17...Young hit his 42nd double of the season.
