The Atlanta Braves do not open their regular season schedule for more than a week but, on Monday, March 18, the team effectively set its Opening Day roster. Granted, a lot can change in 9-10 days, but the Braves did not shy away from the reality that their 26-man group is fairly locked in.

Later in the day, the Battery Power Podcast reconvened for Episode 440 to react to the news. BP’s Scott Coleman and Brad Rowland discuss the following:

It is going to be Reynaldo Lopez time in the No. 5 starter spot to begin the season, which is not exactly a surprise if you have been reading the tea leaves

Forrest Wall is in line for an Opening Day roster spot

Tyler Matzek, Jackson Stephens, and Dylan Lee are projected for the bullpen

Welcome home, Adam Duvall. There is a role for you.

Scott and Brad’s annual NCAA Tournament preview, taking a look at the four regions and giving predictions that will definitely be wrong

Much, much more

David Fletcher, Luke Williams, and Eli White all had some semblance of a shot of making the Opening Day roster. It looks like Fletcher has been supplanted by Luis Guillorme at this point, who, pending some outside-the-organization acquisition or injury, will probably be the backup infielder on Opening Day. The writing on the wall for Eli White may have been the Adam Duvall signing, but now he’ll head back to minor league camp and then presumably Triple-A Gwinnett. Luke Williams seemed like he had a decent shot of making the roster just because he exists and there wouldn’t be much concern in cutting him to make room for pretty much anyone else, but the Braves aren’t going in that direction.

So, that leaves Forrest Wall and the aforementioned Guillorme as bench options surviving this round of cuts. It should be noted that by 28 players in camp, the Braves are apparently including Angel Perdomo and Penn Murfee, which means the roster is essentially final — again, pending something happening that involves players outside the organization, or injuries.

Duvall and Wall will back up the outfield, Guillorme will back up the infield, Reynaldo Lopez takes the fifth starter job, and the bullpen will feature Dylan Lee, Tyler Matzek, and Jackson Stephens, along with the more obvious suspects.

I’m guessing something probably happens that shakes up this group of 26, but who knows what at this point. Stay tuned.

Fried was fine and got BABIPed, the offense did normal things before the backups took over, you get the idea

We all know about the dog days of summer at this point, but do they have a spring equivalent? Like maybe the crab days of spring, because the constellation Cancer is most visible in the Northern Hemisphere in March? We’ll workshop it, I guess.

Anyway, the Braves and Rays tangled in Port Charlotte this afternoon, and things went pretty much how you’d expect for a team with little to figure out at this point playing out the string on the Grapefruit League schedule. The offense was fine, Max Fried was fine, some backups and organizational depth muddled up the score (though no one cares), yadda yadda yadda. Reading about which constellations are most visible during which months of the year might actually be more interesting than what’s going on in Spring Training for the Braves this year.

Probably the biggest takeaway in this game was that Max Fried was his usual a-ok self. His line wasn’t gaudy by any means, with just a 4/1 K/BB ratio in six innings of work, but he pretty much cruised until the BABIP got a hold of him in the sixth. He faced the minimum through three, and just two over the minimum (a walk in the fourth and a single in the fifth) through five. In the sixth, a leadoff single, a non-converted potential double play ball to Alejo Lopez that was scored a hit, and another single plated the first Rays run. Fried got Randy Arozarena to pop out, but then Harold Ramirez hit a bouncer to the right side that A) Luke Williams, at first base, failed to snag on a dive, and B) Williams received the cutoff throw and fired wildly to third, allowing another run to score and putting Ramirez on third. A sacrifice fly and a strikeout later, Fried’s day was done, and yeah, that’s pretty much Generic Spring Training Outing by a Good Starter #47 at this point.

Offensively, the regulars got some hacks in. Ronald Acuña Jr. picked up a leadoff double and scored on an Austin Riley single in the first; Riley ended up going 2-for-2 on the day before being lifted. Andrew Velasquez, who started at DH (heh) in this one, added a homer. Eli White went 1-for-2 with a walk to continue his rise to challenge Forrest Wall for the title of “fifth outfielder with ridiculous Spring Training stats that probably won’t make the roster anyway.” A Travis d’Arnaud sacrifice fly was the third run-plater for the Braves.

After Fried departed, Zach Logue (I don’t really know who this is, though he has 68 major league innings to his name) made it a 7-3 deficit by giving up a three-run homer to Nick Meyer. To Logue’s credit, he did allow just a single in a second inning of work, but from the Braves’ perspective, they got Fried a six-inning tune-up and didn’t even have to use anyone else but Logue to make this game go away, so that’s probably a win for them.

The Rays ended up using eight different pitchers in this game, although one of them was announced and didn’t end up pitching, so hopefully Jacob “Mystery Satchel” Waguespack is alright.

There is actually somehow no Spring Training game for the Braves tomorrow, but they’ll be back in action on Wednesday as they host the Blue Jays, which will probably be yet another game like this one.

Max Fried will make his third appearance of the spring Monday when the Atlanta Braves make the trip to Port Charlotte to take on the Tampa Bay Rays. Right-hander Chris Devenski will start for Tampa.

Fried last pitched in a Grapefruit League game on March 8 where he allowed five hits and four runs over three innings against the Pirates. Ronald Acuña Jr. is back in the leadoff spot for Monday’s game will play right field. Luis Guillorme will hit second and play second base. David Fletcher is also in the lineup at shortstop and hitting fifth.

Arcia is day-to-day after getting hit by a pitch Sunday.

We are less than two weeks away from Opening Day and the Atlanta Braves have done a good job of staying away from injuries. However, they got a scare on Sunday when Orlando Arcia was hit in the wrist by a pitch in the sixth inning by Boston right-hander Chase Shugart. Arcia left the game to undergo X-rays on his wrist.

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that Arcia was feeling better Monday and that X-rays came back negative. Arcia will still undergo an MRI just to make sure there is no fracture.

Arcia (left hand) feels better today. He'll continue to get treatment.

Arcia faced a similar situation last April when he was hit by a pitch in the wrist in a game against the Reds. X-rays initially came back negative but an MRI exam revealed a micro fracture. He would head to the injured list, but was able to return on May 7 without a rehab assignment.

While hopefully this is no more than a precaution this time around, the Braves have very little depth behind Arcia if he were to suffer an injury that required him to miss significant time. The team dealt Vaughn Grissom to the Boston Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade this offseason and also moved Braden Shewmake to the White Sox in the deal that brought back Aaron Bummer.

Luis Guillorme and David Fletcher are both in camp and competing for one of the final bench spots. Guillorme looks like nothing more than a stopgap at shortstop. Fletcher has seen plenty of time at shortstop in his career, but has an 86 wRC+ for his career as a hitter.

UPDATE: The MRI exam on Orlando Arcia’s wrist showed no fracture. He is day-to-day.

Let’s watch bouncyhoops while Snitker picks the last guy on the bench who never plays

It’s that time of year again. It’s pollen season in the South and time for everyone to watch the only important part of the college basketball season. It’s time for everyone to <s>wonder what exactly TRUtv is </s>brag about how well your bracket is doing and complain about how your Final Four team lost the first game. Come play the Battery Power NCAA Tournament Challenge!

I know what you’re saying. “I haven’t watched a game all year. Why would I fill out a bracket?” Well, you’re in good company. None of us have either. It doesn’t stop Ivan from winning every other year. Last year’s tournament was bonkers and this year’s have the potential to be just as crazy. There’s literally no bad bracket until like next Monday. You have the #1 overall seed losing in the second round? Hey, this thing is way nuttier the MLB postseason so that’s probably not that impossible. You have my UAB Blazers going to the Final Four? It could happen. Maybe? No. Go for it anyway.

Come on, what else are you gonna do? You gonna sit around and wait for Brian Snitker to pick the last bench spot aka the dude that holds the plastic sword/ oversized hat/ whatever the celebration trinket is this year? You’re watching Snitker do anything? You reading a book or exercising? Well, that last one is probably ok. But please spend 5-10 minutes here over at ESPN and set up a bracket anyway.
A look at how notable prospects in the Braves system fared in big league games over the past week.

With another week gone by in spring training, we take a look at how some of the Braves prospects of note are faring during spring training.

Nacho Alvarez Jr.

Alvarez had a hit in one at bat, scoring a run, against the Twins on Monday. He played on Tuesday but didn’t record a plate appearance and that was all of his action in big league games this week.

AJ Smith-Shawver

AJ Smith-Shawver got the start on Friday against Detroit and struggled a bit. He lasted three innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. He also allowed a homer to former Braves prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy plus another additional pair of extra base hits.

Drake Baldwin

Baldwin had a busy week, appearing in five big league games and making a couple of starts as the designated hitter. He went 3-10 with a double and had hits in his final three games of the week - two of which came in the starting lineup.

Cade Bunnell

Bunnell appeared in three games on the week and combined to go one for four.

Cal Conley

Conley was a solid two for four with a run scored on the week, appearing in four games and recording one plate appearance in each.

Justin Dean

Dean played in four games and while he did go hitless in four at bats, he drew a pair of walks, stole a base, and scored a run in one of those games.

Jace Grady

Jace Grady came into a pair of games off the bench, going hitless in an at bat in each of those games.

Isaiah Drake

Drake didn’t appear in any big league games this week, but his performance at the Spring Breakout opened some eyes and earned him a spot on this list anyway as he tripled, walked, and stole a base before leaving the game early.

E.J. Exposito

EJ Esposito was 0-2 this week in a limited opportunity.

Luke Waddell

Waddell was hitless in one at bat on Monday then took a walk in his Tuesday plate appearance

Ambioris Tavarez

Tavares appeared in two games and was hitless in one at bat in each of those outings.

Cody Milligan

Milligan had a hit in one at bat on Monday then doubled and scored a run on Wednesday. He finished with a hitless at bat on Sunday, and combined to go two for three on the week.

Sabin Ceballos
