Gwinnett Braves 6, Buffalo Bisons 5
- Sean Newcomb, SP: 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 6 K
- Ozzie Albies, 2B: 4 for 5, double, run, SB (.274/.308/.388)
- Dustin Peterson, LF: 1 for 4, double, RBI
Ozzie Albies stole the show with four hits, he led the bottom of the first with a double, reached 3rd on a Camargo bunt attempt that he ended up reaching on before both of them were knocked in with a Lane Adams double. Dustin Peterson came up next with a double to make it 3-0. After the off day yesterday Sean Newcomb was on the hill and was all over the place, he threw 103 pitches in just 4 innings, walking six batters. He was lucky to only give up three runs really as he loaded the bases pretty much every inning. In fairness to Newcomb, multiple people have said that especially in the early parts of this game that he was getting squeezed by the umpire so that could account for some of his walks. That said, late in the start not even CB Bucknor would have given him some of those pitches (or maybe he would....CB is pretty awful).
David Freitas smacked a 2 run homer and Xavier Avery score on a fielder’s choice to make it 6-3 Braves. From there Gwinnett’s bullpen kept up it’s excellent play as of late. Andrew Albers went 2.2 scoreless with 3 strikeouts, Caleb Dirks gave up 2 runs in the 8th but Rhiner Cruz came on a closed it out with 1.2 clean innings.

Florida Fire Frogs 10, Clearwater Threshers 4 - GAME 1
- Austin Riley, 3B: 2 for 3, HR, 3 runs, 2 walks
- Braxton Davidson, LF: 2 for 5, double, RBI, 2 runs
Resumed in the top of the 4th inning with Florida down 4-0 after Drew Harrington got touched up early before the rain came and washed the game out Monday night. Jacob Webb got the spot start and was lights out for 3.2 innings. Then in the bottom of the 6th the offense exploded for 6 runs with Didder, Lago, Seymour, Obregon and Neslony all notching RBI. The hits kept coming in the 7th as Braxton Davidson doubled to score Austin Riley and was chased home by a Ray-Patrick Didder triple. Didder scored on a Lago ground out and it was 9 to 4 Frogs. Austin Riley crushed a solo homer in the 8th as the finishing blow.
Florida Fire Frogs 1, Clearwater Threshers 3 - GAME 2
- Ricardo Sanchez, SP: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (3.80 ERA)
- Braxton Davidson, LF: 1 for 3, HR
Ricardo Sanchez got the start and looked good only giving up 2 earned runs in 6 innings while striking out 8. He has looked really good to start the year off with 44 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 45 innings pitched this year.
Braxton Davidson accounted for the only offense of the game with a solo shot in the 2nd inning. Tyler Neslony doubled and continues to hit reasonably well as he has been getting more playing time since the Acuna promotion but isn’t doing much with it so far, in particular on the defensive side.
Next Game: hosting Clearwater. Game 1 resumes 5:30 PM. Game 2 starting 30 minutes following Game 1. Game 2 Probable Starter-Ricardo Sanchez
Rome Braves 6, Asheville Tourists 5
- Cristian Pache, CF: 2 for 5, RBI, stolen base
- Brett Cumberland, DH: 1 for 4, double, RBI
- Tucker Davidson, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0R, 0 BB, 3 K
Riley Pint got the start for Asheville and was not on it today, he hit Marcus Mooney with the first pitch of the game, walked the next batter on 4 pitches before Pache ripped the first pitch he saw to score Mooney. After loading the bases back up Pint plucked Herbert to make it 2-0 Rome. Josephina and Concepcion’s back to back singles made it 5-0 in the first.
Jeremy Walker did just enough over 5 innings to hold on to the early 6 run lead giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while walking just one. Walker has had a tough start to the season and while we like that he can maintain his velocity late into his starts, there is not much life to his fastball and it is clear that hitters are sitting on his pitches and being able to drive them with some authority. Tucker Davidson continued his good work out of the Rome bullpen, he has 28 strikeouts and only 9 walks in 22.2 relief innings so far this year.
Next Game: Wednesday 5/24 visiting Asheville @10:30 AM. Probable Starter- Oriel Caicedo
