Sometimes you have nights where absolutely nothing goes right, and that was the case last night for the Braves as they suffered a bummer of a beatdown at the hands of the Giants. Tonight’s a new night, and the the Braves will be trying to bounce back with Mike Foltynewicz taking the mound.
This will be Folty’s second go-around against the Giants, and the first time actually went pretty well for him. He only gave up three hits, two walks, and one earned run against the Giants, and that came off of a home run from Brandon Belt. Other than that, he pitched about as well as you could expect Folty to pitch over six innings of work, and the Braves won the game 5-3. That was all the way back on May 30th, and times have changed since then, so expecting a repeat performance would be a bit much. It would definitely be nice to see him repeat it though — especially considering that a solid road performance would be nice to see out of the 24-year-old righty.
Meanwhile, Jake Peavy was the scheduled starter for the Giants tonight, but he’s been placed on the DL. As a result, the Giants have been forced to call up rookie pitcher Albert Suarez for a spot start. Suarez has a 4.20 ERA and a 4.24 FIP over 16 appearances — including six starts — this season. One of those starts actually came on June 1st against the Braves, and the Braves ended up getting three runs off of Suarez over five innings. They ended up adding two more runs over the rest of the game and ended up winning a wild one 5-4 in extra innings.
It would be nice to see an exciting game tonight instead of the debacle that we got last night, in which the Giants basically had the game won in the first few innings while the Braves dropped countless opportunities to even score. Considering the pitching matchup, there’s a chance that we will see a very entertaining game tonight.
