The Atlanta Braves will take part in an historic event on Sunday when they take on the Miami Marlins in the first regular season game of a professional sporting event to ever take place on an active military base. The event will also be the first Major League game to ever be played in the state of North Carolina.
The field that the Braves and Marlins will play on was built on the site of a former golf course. Construction began in early March and the entire project was completed on June 27.
The field dimensions will be 331’ down the lines and will jet out to 387’ in the power alleys. The center field wall will be 405’ from home plate. Field construction required 100,000 square feet of Bermuda sod, 400 tons of warning track mix and 250 tons of infield clay.
Following Sunday’s game, the facility will be converted into a multipurpose recreational facility, consisting of 12 athletic fields to be used by servicemen and their families.
