Todd Cunningham's Highlight Reel Day

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta prospect Todd Cunningham had quite a day yesterday in Gwinnett

Todd Cunningham has been sort of a forgotten prospect in Atlanta's system. He does nothing outstanding, but plenty of things well. Plus, he's been blocked in Atlanta by the outfield trio of Upton, Upton, and Heyward. But Cunningham is still pretty good, and flashed all his skills yesterday in Gwinnett's 3-2 win over the Durham Bulls.

First, he helped the G-Braves break a 1-1 tie by leading off the bottom of the third inning with a triple to center field. You can see Cunningham's impressive bat speed and foot speed in this clip. He's never going to be a big stolen base guy in the bigs, but his speed should translate into double digit steals. And his excellent bat speed (coupled with a decent eye) provides a good indication that he wouldn't be overmatched at the plate.

As awesome as that triple was, it pales in comparison to Cunningham's game-saving catch in the 9th. But don't take my word for it, check it out:

He won't be a stellar center fielder in the bigs, but Cunningham's glove and speed will make him an average center fielder or an above average corner outfielder in the majors.

Taken together, this is a guy who should be a very solid 4th outfielder on a big league roster. Jordan Schafer has done little to justify the continued faith the Braves have placed in him as a bench outfielder. It's time for Todd Cunningham to get his shot. He's ready, and he's earned it.
