Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/4

Elsa

4th of July edition

Gwinnett Braves 3, Durham Bulls 2

Todd Cunningham ripped out four hits Friday including his first triple of the season. Cunningham's profile is defensively focused, so it is nice to see breakouts like this in hopes he can soon be the Braves 4th outfielder. Phil Gosselin also had a XBH, his 21st of the season. As I mentioned the other day, although only one viewing, Gossein showed a great ability to barrel up the ball. Aaron Northcraft went six innings, only allowing one run on five hits. Nice to see a bounce back start like this after only being able to get through 2.2 innings his last start.

Gwinnett Stats

Mississippi Braves 0, Montgomery Stars 3

Despite outhitting Montgomery 8-4, the M-Braves ended up on the wrong side of this one. Jason Hursh went seven strong, only needing 93 pitches, giving up two earned. The lineup was shutout by Biscuits starter Dylan Floro who threw a complete game 8-hitter on 88 pitches. Mississippi did put together eight singles, but the aggressiveness did them in, only having 2 RISP on the night.

Mississippi Stats

Frederick Keys 4, Lynchburg Hillcats 8

  • Eric Garcia 2B: 2-5, 2B (9), 2R
  • Will Skinner RF: 2-3, HR (6), SB (3), 2R
  • David Nick RF: 2-4, SB (3)
  • Jarrett Miller: 6.2IP, 8H, 3ER, BB, 5K
  • Alex WIlson: 2.1IP, H, 0ER, 0BB, K
Jarrett Miller got the start, going 6.2 innings for the 'Cats, allowing four runs (three earned) Friday. The performance lowered his ERA to 4.25 on the season. The offense got to face Orioles top prospect Dylan Bundy, who only went 4.2, allowing three runs. Will Skinner homered in the 6th, his 6th of the season. He also swiped his third base of the season. The 6th was when the damage was done - a four run inning led to the eventual win - bringing the club to within one game of .500.

Lynchburg Stats

Rome Braves 6 Charleston River Dogs 1

  • Keith Curico CF: 2-4, HR (1), 2B (2), 3R
  • Reed Harper SS: 2-5, 2B (1), 2R
  • Victor Caratini C: 2-3, 2B (13), 2BB
  • Victor Reyes RF: 1-4
  • Yean Carlos Gil: 7.2IP, 5H, 0ER, 0BB, 5K
  • Pete Perez: 1.1IP, 3H, ER, BB, 0K

Friday saw a phenomenal start from Rome starter Yean Carlos Gil. The 23-year-old went 7.2 innings, only allowing five hits while striking out five. This continues his great run of success that this level this season, now posting a 70:14 strikeout-to-walk in 83 innings. Keith Curico had himself a day, smacking his first home run of the season and knocking his second double at the single-A level. Curico projects to be more of a speed based player, so any sort of power from the 5'10" center fielder would be a bonus.

Danville Braves 2 Burlington Royals 7

  • Sean Goodfrey CF: 1-4, R
  • Jordan Edgerton 3B: 2-4, HR (3), R
  • Tanner Krietemeier 1B: 1-3, 2B (2), BB
  • Andry Ubiera 4IP, 6H, 2ER, BB, 2K
  • Kyle Kinman: 3IP, 2H, 0ER, BB, 3K
  • Colby Holmes: IP, 5H, 5ER, BB, K

It was a rare loss for the D-Braves Friday, as a five run 8th for Burlington put the game out of reach. Colby Holmes was the name charged for those runs, giving up those five in one inning of work. Andry Ubiera got the start, giving up two runs over four innings, raising his ERA in rookie ball to 1.80. Jordan Edgerton was the only real story on offense, lifting his third home run of the season. He continues his hot start, now hitting .408 on the season.
