Winning streak at eight as Braves defeat D-backs 5-2

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

There weren't any fireworks during the game, but the Braves knocked around Josh Collmenter early and received a strong outing from Ervin Santana in earning an eighth straight win with a 5-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Atlanta's offense jumped all over Collmenter, tagging him for two runs in the first inning on Freddie Freeman's single and a groundout by Jason Heyward. Collmenter was made to suffer further in the second inning when Andrelton Simmons singled home a run with the bases loaded. Then Justin Upton took a two-strike pitch clearly in the strike zone for ball four, forcing home Atlanta's fourth run. Of the 11 hits Collmenter allowed in six innings, seven came inside the first two innings and nine were singles.

Santana had a bit of wildness in the second inning when a wild pitch allowed Martin Prado to score from third. He allowed only one other run, and that came in the eighth after he left the game. Santana struck out six and walked only one in 7.1 innings.

Freddie Freeman drove in an insurance run in the seventh, and Craig Kimbrel closed out the win. B.J. Upton had two more hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Also, thanks to the Nats for losing. The division lead is now 1.5 games.
