Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/28

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

Promotions around the system highlighted last night's minor league action.

Charlotte Knights 10, Gwinnett Braves 6

  • Brandon Boggs, RF: 1-3, HR(6), .250
  • Todd Cunningham, CF: 2-3, SB(11), .278
  • Phil Gosselin, 3B: 2-4, .332
  • Joey Terdoslavich, 1B: 1-4, .225
  • David Carpenter, SP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
  • Kameron Loe, RP: 2.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 8.83 ERA
The G-Braves lost a slugfest against the Knights last night, falling 10-6. Brandon Boggs had the big blow with a three-run bomb for Gwinnett. Todd Cunningham and Phil Gosselin each had multi-hit games at the top of Gwinnett's order, with Cunningham adding his 11th steal. I'm not really sure why he hasn't replaced Jordan Schafer on the Atlanta roster yet. David Carpenter made his first of 2 rehab "starts" with Gwinnett, tossing a perfect inning with a strikeout. Kameron Loe came on after Carpenter, and, well, before you ask, I have no idea why he's still with the organization, either.

Mississippi Braves 5, Birmingham Barons 4

  • Cedric Hunter, LF: 3-5, HR(7), .311
  • Jose Peraza, 2B: 1-4, BB, 2 SB(3,4), CS(2), .425
  • Kyle Kubitza, 3B: 0-3, BB, .304
  • Seth Loman, DH: 1-3, 2B(17), .251
  • Mitch Atkins, SP: 6 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 3.86 ERA
Mississippi won a nail-biter against Birmingham, thanks in large part to Cedric Hunter. The M-Braves' left-fielder smacked a home run as part of a three hit day against the Barons. Jose Peraza continued his assault on pitchers, reaching twice and swiping a pair of bases. He was also picked off (which counts as a caught stealing) for the first time in AA. Mitch Atkins was entirely too hittable, allowing 10 across 6 innings of work, but managed to wiggle out of trouble several times, en route to allowing 4 runs.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans 8, Lynchburg Hillcats 3

  • Kevin Ahrens, DH: 2-4, 2B(22), .279
  • Justin Bloxom, RF: 2-4, 2B(1), .250
  • Daniel Watts, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R(3 ER), 1 BB, 3 K, 3.00 ERA
No no-hitter for Lynchburg tonight. The Hillcats were thrashed by the Pelicans 8-3. Hours before the game, Kyle Wren was promoted to AA Mississippi, which pretty much leaves the Hillcats with a barren wasteland of a lineup, at least as far as prospects go. (Sims and Parsons are the only real prospects left.) Daniel Watts, who has a great name, was slightly less-than-great on the mound tonight, allowing 5 runs (but only 3 earned) on 6 hits across 5 innings of work.

Rome Braves 3, Savannah Sand Gnats 4

  • Victor Reyes, RF: 3-4, 2 2B(12,13), .275
  • Connor Oliver, CF: 1-4, 2B(11), BB, .264
  • Gerald Chin, 2B: 3-4, .250
  • Victor Caratini, C: 1-4, BB, .273
  • Yean Carlos Gil, SP: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 3.57 ERA
That sound you heard just now was Victor Reyes's bat waking up. Rome's right fielder notched his 2nd three-hit game of the week, and looks to be shaking off the slump that has plagued him for most of June. Gerald Chin, a Panamanian product who came stateside last week with Danville, was promoted today and promptly notched a three-hit game. Yean Carlos Gil turned in another strong quality start, striking out 6 and walking none over 7 innings. Gil's been knocked around a bit of late, but he still has an impressive 65/14 K/BB ratio in 75 innings of work.

Bluefield Blue Jays 1, Danville Braves 8

  • Jordan Edgerton, 3B: 3-4, .417
  • Mike Dodig, 1B: 3-4, 2B(2), BB, .333
  • Codey McElroy, SS: 2-5, 3B(1), .353
  • Tanner Murphy, C: 1-2, 2B(2), 2 BB, .120
  • Andry Ubiera, SP: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 0.82 ERA
  • Felix Marte, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 4.50 ERA
Sooooo, Danville's offense might be pretty good. The D-Braves hung 8 runs on the Blue Jays' rookie ball affiliate in Bluefield (isn't that cute?) last night, thanks in large part to 2014 9th round draft pick Jordan Edgerton. "Edge" (as I have just now decided he should be called) rapped out 3 hits and is now hitting a scalding .417/.488/.555 with 5 walks and only 2 strikeouts across his first 9 professional games. Small sample size, for sure, but an impressive start nonetheless. First baseman Mike Dodig also chipped in a 3-hit game with a double and a walk for good measure. Tanner Murphy reached base 3 times as well, while shortstop Codey McElroy, Atlanta's 19th round draft choice this year, hit his first professional triple. Andry Ubiera tossed a five-inning dandy, allowing only 1 run while striking out 4. Recently-converted outfielder Felix Marte hurled 2 hitless frames in relief, striking out 3.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Blue Jays 4

  • Braxton Davidson, LF: 1-3, .200
  • Jose Pina, DH: 1-4, 3B(1), .167
  • Jared Cruz, 1B: 1-3, BB, SB(2), .182
  • Garrett Fulenchek, SP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Dylan Stuart, RP: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 2.08 ERA
Atlanta's 2014 first-day draftees played together for their first time yesterday. 1st rounder Braxton Davidson went 1-3 with a single, while 2nd rounder Garrett Fulenchek tossed 2 scoreless innings in his second start of the year. Other than that, there wasn't much of note happening in this game. The GCL Braves scored 5 runs on only 6 hits thanks to some GCL-level defense from the GCL Jays.
