Christian Bethancourt to make first MLB start

Daniel Shirey-US PRESSWIRE

Juan Jaime sent down in corresponding move

In a surprise move the Braves are calling up Christian Bethancourt to make his first major league start in game two of Saturday's double header against the Phillies. Juan Jaime is being sent down to make room for Bethancourt as the team is apparently concerned about Evan Gattis but not enough to send him to the disabled list yet.

MLB rules do allow for a 26th man on the roster for double headers but Gus Schlosser had already been announced to fill this role and he can only be replaced if he is injured during the first game. Seeing as how Schlosser didn't pitch in the first game this necessitated sending down Jaime to make room for Bethancourt.

Bethancourt is raw both offensively and defensively and isn't going to come in and be Yadier Molina from day one. He isn't ready to be a full time major league catcher but it will be exciting to see what this highly regarded prospect can do with his first opportunity to get some major league run. It would be great to see a Phillies baserunner test his arm as that is one part of his game absolutely ready for the big leagues. Hopefully Gattis will be ready to play soon as he has been arguably the Braves most valuable player so far this season.
