Braves denied sweep of Astros with 6-1 loss

Scott Halleran

The Braves didn't have many chances to score but when they did, they often failed as they drop the series finale to the Astros.

Atlanta's lone run came in the opening inning when Tommy La Stella's sac fly scored B.J. Upton, who had singled to start the game.

Astros tied the score on Jonathan Singleton's double that caromed off the left-field scoreboard. Then in the fourth, after Matt Dominguez was grazed with a pitch, he scored the go-ahead run on a groundout.

A mental miscue by Chris Johnson prevented the Braves from scoring in the fifth. After Justin Upton doubled, he was caught in a rundown on Johnson's infield grounder. Upton stayed in the rundown long enough for Johnson to go to second, but he elected to stay at first. Sure enough, Andrelton Simmons singled, and that would've brought home the tying run.

That may not have mattered because Mike Minor couldn't escape trouble in the fifth. Matt Dominguez broke his hitless streak with a three-run homer after two were out, giving the Astros a four-run cushion.

Jarred Cosart induced 10 groundouts in seven innings and surrendered six hits.

George Springer put the game further out of reach with a seventh-inning home run.
