Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/13

Alex Wood whiffed 5 in 3.2 innings last night. - Scott Cunningham

Blake Brown and Daniel Carroll have nice nights at the plate, while Alex Wood tosses an excellent game.

Gwinnett Braves 5, Louisville Bats 1

  • Jose Constanza, RF: 2-5, SB(13), .268
  • Joey Terdoslavich, 1B: 2-4, BB, .237
  • Christian Bethancourt, C: 1-5, .269
  • Ozzie Martinez, SS: 2-3, 2B(2), 3 RBI, BB, .246
  • Tyler Pastornicky, 2B: 0-5, .304
  • Alex Wood, SP: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K, Pickoff
Alex Wood made his first start on his assignment to get stretched out for the big league club, and it was a beauty. Wood threw 34 of his 58 pitches for strikes and allowed only 2 hits in 3.2 innings. He walked two batters, but struck out five, and also picked the Bats' leadoff man off of first base. Opposing Wood was an old friend, Jair Jurrjens. The G-Braves lit JJ up, tagging him for 5 runs in 6 innings. Ozzie Martinez did most of the damage with a single and a double, accounting for 3 of Gwinnett's 5 RBI. Jose Constanza and Joey Terdoslavich each posted multi-hit games for the G-Braves.

Mississippi Braves 2, Tennessee Smokies 8
  • Cedric Hunter, LF: 3-4, HR(6), 2 RBI, .305
  • Kyle Kubitza, 3B: 1-3, BB, .287
  • Myke Jones, CF: 0-3, BB, .282
  • J.R. Graham, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 4.61 ERA
Bleh. Mississippi was smoked by Tennessee (I'm so sorry) last night, losing 8-2. J.R. Graham had a thoroughly average start, giving up 2 runs over five innings. He only walked one (yay!) but only struck out two (not yay). He also hit a double at the plate, which was more than most of the M-Braves' position players could muster. Cedric Hunter accounted for the entirety of Mississippi's offense with a home run and an RBI single. Kyle Kubitza was the only other M-Brave to reach base more than once.

Lynchburg Hillcats 1, Salem Red Sox 6
  • Jose Peraza, SS: 3-4, SB(33), .341
  • David Nick, LF: 2-4, .293
  • Daniel Carroll, RF: 2-3, 2 2B(6,7), 2 SB(4,5), .283
  • Lucas Sims, SP: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5.00 ERA
Lucas Sims had his start cut very short last night by an hour-long rain delay. Sims started working in the rain, and apparently it affected his control, as he had 2 walks, 2 wild pitches, and a HBP in one inning. When play resumed, Daniel Carroll was a one-man wrecking crew, notching two doubles and two steals. Unfortunately, that was about all the Hillcats could muster outside of 3 hits and a steal from Jose Peraza. The Hillcats didn't help their cause any, with 3 fielding errors leading to several unearned runs.

Rome Braves 6, Asheville Tourists 7
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 1-3, 2B(8), .270
  • Blake Brown, LF: 2-3, 2 BB, .239
  • Victor Caratini, DH: 1-5, .288
  • Victor Reyes, RF: 0-5, .285
  • Steve Janas, SP: 4.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 5.49 ERA
Steve Janas had a start to forget last night, as he allowed 6 runs on 10 hits and 3 walks in 4.2 innings against the Asheville Tourists. The Tourists have one of the better lineups in the league, but it's still...yuck. Rome scored 6 runs despite only managing 8 hits. Blake Brown was on base four times, raising his average up to .239 on the season. After an abysmal start, the toolsy outfielder has put up a .300/.500/.500 line in his last 10 games. He sure knows how to take a walk; he has 31 in 57 games this year. No other R-Brave was on base more than once. Johan Camargo smacked his 8th double of the year however, continuing his hot streak at the dish.
