Weekend Digest: Manny Machado has issues; Cy Young winner passes; bad news for Billingsley

MLB news from the past week

Manny Machado throws his bat, appeals five-game suspension

It all started last weekend between the A's and O's. Manny Machado was upset about what he thought was a hard tag by Josh Donaldson. Then on Sunday, he flings the bat toward third base following a brushback pitch at the knees, inciting a bench-clearing fracas. In my opinion, five games for something like this is weak. In case you missed it:

Cy Young winner Bob Welch passes away

For those old enough to remember, Welch first gained notoriety for striking out Reggie Jackson in the ninth inning of Game 2 of the 1978 World Series. He would move on to Oakland where he won the Cy Young Award in 1990 and was the pitching coach at Arizona in 2001.

White Sox sign Olympic speed skater

Eddy Alvarez represented the USA in the Winter Olympics, but he signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox earlier this week. Alvarez was a shortstop in high school as well as during his one season of college ball.

Chad Billingsley has another elbow injury

Just when he's recovering from last year's TJ surgery, he rips a flexor tendon. He could very well miss all of 2014 in addition to all but two starts of 2013. As the article states, I see it unlikely the Dodgers will exercise his 2015 option.

Wilson Ramos injured…again

Ramos has had a number of injuries the last couple of years, like the hammy injury suffered last year that shelved him for a significant portion of the season. He also tore the ACL in his right knee in 2012. This is his second DL stint of the year.
