Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/9

Aaron Northcraft punched out 7 batters last night - USA TODAY Sports

Cody Martin and Aaron Northcraft's pitching performances were the highlight of a down day in the Braves system.

Rochester Red Wings 1, Gwinnett Braves 2

  • Phil Gosselin, LF: 2-4, 3B(3), RBI, .329
  • Tyler Pastornicky, 2B: 1-4, RBI, .317
  • Christian Bethancourt, C: 1-4, .261
  • Brandon Boggs, RF: 1-3, 2B(6), .229
  • Cody Martin, SP: 6.2 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 3.58 ERA
  • Juan Jaime, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 2.70 ERA
Gwinnett eked out a win over the Red Wings last night on the back of Cody Martin's impressive start. Martin was a bit too hittable, but used 5 strikeouts to wiggle out of trouble all night. He went 6.2 innings, allowing only 1 run on a solo home run while striking out 5. Phil Gosselin led off and played left field, going 2-4 with a single and an RBI triple. Tyler Pastornicky drove in the other G-Braves run. Brandon Boggs added a double, while Christian Bethancourt had a 1-4 night batting in the 3 spot in the lineup.

Chattanooga Lookouts 2, Mississippi Braves 1
  • Barrett Kleinknecht, 2B: 2-4, RBI, PO, .273
  • Gustavo Nunez, SS: 2-5, SB(2), .301
  • Kyle Kubitza, 3B: 1-4, .295
  • Myke Jones, CF: 1-5, .286
  • Aaron Northcraft, SP: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K, 2.84 ERA
  • Chasen Shreve, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 2.50 ERA
Mississippi wasted an excellent pitching performance from Aaron Northcraft last night in a 2-1 loss. Northcraft allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings and paired that with a sterling 7:0 K:BB ratio. Chasen Shreve came on in relief of Northcraft and was even more dominant, hurling 2 perfect frames with 4 punchouts. Barrett Kleinknecht and Gustavo Nunez were the only players to reach base more than once, which probably explains the sputtering offense. Kyle Kubitza extended his current hit streak to 5 games; he has reached base 10 times during that span.

Lynchburg Hillcats 0, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5
  • Jose Peraza, 2B: 1-4, .330
  • Kyle Wren, CF: 2-4, .281
  • Daniel Carroll, RF: 1-3, BB, SB(2), .242
  • Greg Ross, SP: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R(4 ER), 3 BB, 1 K, 3.56 ERA
Lynchburg was blanked by Atlanta's former High-A affiliate Myrtle Beach last night. Newly minted Carolina League All Star Greg Ross put up a clunker, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) in 6.1 innings. He also walked 3 batters and only struck out one; just an all around forgettable outing. Surprisingly, Lynchburg recorded a steal that wasn't from Jose Peraza or Kyle Wren; Daniel Carroll had a 1-3 afternoon with his 2nd swipe of the year. Peraza and Wren still had fine nights, as the pair combined for half of Lynchburg's 6 hits.

Augusta Green Jackets 10, Rome Braves 1
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 2-4, .264
  • Victor Caratini, C: 1-2, 2B(11), BB, .303
  • Ross Wilson, 2B: 1-4, HR(1), .302
  • Daniel Watts, SP: 4.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 5.27 ERA
Different day, same Rome. The R-Braves dropped their 43rd(!) game last night, as Daniel Watts was absolutely blasted by the Green Jackets. Watts allowing an absurd 13 baserunners across 4.2 innings, leading to 5 runs. The toothless Rome offense couldn't recover from that hole, as they only managed 1 run on the evening. Johan Camargo continued to shake off his putrid start, notching a two-hit game. The lithe, raw shortstop is hitting .341 over his last 10 games, and has been bumped into the top half of the order as a result. Victor Caratini reached base twice with a double and a walk, while Ross Wilson smacked his first homer of the year to account for the entirety of Rome's offense.
