Braves offense has dismal performance in 3-1 loss to Rockies

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta left seven on base and are now 1-18 with RISP in the series.

If there was one game in this series that the Braves would've had the slightest chance of losing, this would not have been it by a long shot.

Juan Nicasio was winless in four previous starts against the Braves, but a frustrating performance by Atlanta's offense changed all that as the Rockies beat the Braves 3-1.

Through the first five innings, the two offenses had a combined total of three hits, one of them being another home run by Michael Cuddyer leading off the second inning.

One run didn't seem like too much to overcome with the way the Braves have handled Juan Nicasio in the past. Atlanta's two-out rally in the third looked to be the perfect opportunity to leapfrog into the lead. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Justin Upton, but the rally went for naught.

The Atlanta offense failed to take advantage of four walks by Nicasio, who allowed just two hits and struck out five in six innings. Troy Tulowitzki rewarded his pitcher with a home run off Mike Minor leading off the sixth to extend Colorado's lead.

In the top of the seventh with Charlie Culberson at third and the infield playing in, Freddie Freeman picked a ground ball from Charlie Blackmon and fired to the plate. Evan Gattis dove for a tag on the sliding Culberson, and the call was out. A challenge revealed that Gattis had missed the tag and the call was reversed, resulting in a third run. That run signaled the end of the day for Minor, who struck out six in 6.1 innings.

Atlanta threatened in the eighth against Colorado's relief corps. B.J. Upton singled and Freddie Freeman hooked a double just inside the first base line, but could only manage a single run on Justin Upton's sacrifice fly.
