Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/6

Chris Roughgarden

The Braves and their affiliates went a combined 0-4 Sunday

Gwinnett Braves 1, Durham Bulls 8

  • Todd Cunningham CF: 1-4, BB, SB (2)
  • Derrick Mitchell LF: 1-4, 2B, R
  • Ernesto Mejia DH: 0-2, 2BB
  • Philip Gosselin 3B: 2-3, 2B, BB
  • Sean Kazmar 2B-SS: 1-4, 2B
  • Mitch Atkins: 4IP, 3H, 3ER, 3BB, 3K - 78 pitches, 50 strikes
  • Mark Lamm: 2IP, H, 0ER, 2BB, K
  • Luis Vasquez: IP, 4H, 4ER, BB, 2K
Gwinnett never really made it a game Sunday as the offense sputtered to a one run performance. Mitch Atkins never found his groove, giving up three runs over four innings. Bullpen hopeful Luis Vasquez got roughed up in the 8th, giving up four earned, throwing 18 of his 30 pitches for strikes. He did record two strikeouts however. Phil Gosselin had the only multi-hit performance, including his first double of the season. Todd Cunningham reached twice and stole a base, his second of the season. Those are the kind of skills that could make Cunningham a valuable fourth outfielder in case of injury this season. Ernesto Mejia was left homeless, surprisingly, but finished off a great first week with a .308/.471/1.231 triple slash.

Zach Jadofksy came in and gave up up four runs, allowing Fredrick to take the lead, eventually holding on and split the series 2-2. Jarrett Miller made the start and only gave up one run over 4.1 innings. Will Skinner went deep for the second time this season. The 24-year-old RF is back in Lynchburg again for the 2014 season. Josh Elander and Levi Hyams each collected two hits of his own, Elander scoring one of the two Hillcat runs on the day.

Rome Braves 2, Hagerstown Suns 6

  • Race Parmenter: IP, 0ER, BB, 2K

Rome dropped the final game of the season, taking a 6-2 loss Sunday night. Starter Jared Dettmann went five strong innings, giving up a walk while striking out three. Rafael Briceno followed up with two innings of two run ball, but was credited with the blown save on the night. Rome's three errors cost them, as three of the six runs were unearned. Two of those came from up and coming SS Johan Camargo, his third on the young season. At the plate, Blake Brown continued his excellent start, ripping his third double of the season. Bryan De La Rosa went 1-4 at catcher, but committed the final Rome error and was caught stealing trying to steal second.

Beginning next week, we will start giving out hitter and position players of the week. It would be wrong to not fully acknowledge Ernesto Mejia's fast start is the first four games this week. Mejia "only" went 4-13, but all four hits were homers. He also added two walks and is sporting a cool 1.701 OPS. The 28-year old first baseman has averaged 26 home runs over the past three seasons.
