Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/28

Shae Simmons: Maybe not a cyborg? - Stacy Revere

J.R. Graham continued his rehab tour and Shae Simmons proved he was mortal.

Gwinnett Braves 0, Toledo Mud Hens 8

Despite managing 8 hits, Gwinnett was shut out by the Mud Hens last night. Every position player got a hit...except for Christian Bethancourt. The Braves' all-world defensive catcher has had a horrific start to his season, batting just a measly .186 with a paltry .220 slugging percentage. It's too early to panic, but...yeesh. Mitch Atkins started for Gwinnett and was OK, but sadly OK doesn't cut it when your opponent is pitching a shutout.

Mississippi Braves 9, Pensacola Blue Wahoos 6

Now this was a much more exciting game. Mississippi scorched Pensacola for 9 runs, with the biggest blow coming on a bases-loaded triple by LF Gustavo Nunez. Nunez wrapped up a 4 RBI day by reaching base 3 times and pushing his average to a cool .333. Not to be outdone, Elmer Reyes reached base 4 times with a pair of singles, a walk, and a double. Matt Lipka put together one of my favorite lines of the year so far, coming in mid-game and drawing 2 walks, including one with the bases loaded. He also swiped his 9th bag of the year. Sadly, Lipka's only hitting .191 so far, a cautionary tale about reading too much into spring training stats. J.R. Graham continued his excellent work on the comeback trail by whiffing 6 men across 4 innings. The heretofore perfect Shae Simmons finally showed he was mortal, giving up the first two runs of his 2014 campaign.

Lynchburg Hillcats @ Potomac Nationals - POSTPONED

Weather is crazy, y'all. To make up for the lack of game, take a look at the awesome logos of Mississippi's opponent tonight (in case you were curious what a blue wahoo is).
