Santana Pleased With First Start (video)

The anticipated spring training debut went rather well for Ervin Santana just eight days after signing a $14.1 million-free agent deal to help play a critical piece this season in the Braves starting rotation. The 31-year old went out against the Mets for two innings of work and allowed one run while giving up a pair of hits, one which was a bunt single in the first inning. The velocity was very much there for Santana as his fastball topped out at 95 m.ph. in the first inning before dropping to around 91 m.p.h. in the second inning. He along with Mike Minor will stay for extended spring trainings to get more work in before joining the team most likely in the Braves first homestand of the season.

Upton Brothers Have Multi Hit Days (video)

With B.J. batting second in the lineup again and Justin following him they had a big day at the plate in the Braves 7-6 loss to the Mets on Thursday. The two brothers in their second season with the team each had two hits in four plate appearance despite J Up being robbed of a home run in the first inning. The Braves opening day lineup is still up in question on not who will start, but what the order will be. B.J. has hit .295 this spring as he has a much smoother swing and looks to carry his success into the regular season which starts in just 10 days.

Braves Trim Roster Even More

Five more players were cut from the Braves roster as the club tries to narrow down its search for the few remaining bullpen spots and bench roles, those players were: Luis Vasquez, Christian Bethancourt, Juan Jaime, Todd Cunningham, and Elmer Reyes. Mark Bowman believes that Frank Wren will likely be scouring the trade market this next week for relief pitchers who could bolster the pen. He said the reason why Vasquez was sent down was that his arm speed was not the same as they saw back in the Dominican winter ball league. The sidearmer was topping out at around 91-92 mph in his last outing after throwing mid 90's consistently in the offseason.

He also tells the former Mariners second baseman that Ervin Santana, Gavin Floyd, and David Hale are the keys to success this season along with a strong offense.
