Simmons has emerged as the top defensive shortstop in the game in his short time in the big leagues, so it only made sense for him to be next in line for a huge contract after the Braves locked up Freddie Freeman, Julio Teheran and Craig Kimbrel to long-term deals.
Frank Wren confirmed those thoughts by telling media, "For us, it was somewhat of a no-brainer that he would be part of that young core that we would tie up."
Simmons added, "I was hoping something would get done. I couldn't be happier, signing long term with a team I always grew up watching."
The final breakdown of the deal is $1 million, $3 million, $6 million, $8 million, $11 million, $13 million and $15 million with a $1 million signing bonus.
The extension gets keeps Simmons with the Braves through two pre-arbitration years, three arbitration years and two free-agent years.
