Friday night in Philadelphia, Atlanta ran into the buzz saw known as Cliff Lee. Lee surrendered just two hits and one run in eight innings while striking out ten batters and and walking none as the Braves fell to the Phillies 2-1.
Lee was masterful, accumulating 14 whiffs on 102 pitches. He threw 23 changeups for strikes, and recorded eight whiffs on the pitch.
Scoreless heading into the third inning, Andrelton Simmons changed things with a solo home run to left field, his 14th of the season, to make it a 1-0 game.
Things stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh, when Atlanta starter Mike Minor finally made a mistake. After six scoreless innings, Minor allowed a two-out single to Darin Ruf that brought third baseman Cody Asche to the plate. With two outs, Asche took the first pitch he saw from Minor in the at-bat, and deposited it into the seats to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Philadelphia.
