The Miami Marlins took care of Atlanta's magic number while the Braves were on the field playing, topping the Nationals to clinch Atlanta's first division title since 2005. With that taken care of, the Braves finished business and celebrated the clinching by beating the Cubs 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Chicago.
Julio Teheran dominated for Atlanta, allowing just four hits and one run while walking none and striking out seven batters in six innings of work. He racked up 14 whiffs in 91 pitches, including eight on his four-seam fastball. The only run he allowed came in the bottom of the first, as Dioner Navarro singled to right to score Anthony Rizzo.
That cut Atlanta's lead to 2-1, as Freddie Freeman got things going with a two-homer in the top of the first off of Edwin Jackson. The Braves added to that lead in the fourth, as Andrelton Simmons connected on the 16th homer of the season, a solo shot to left field that made it 3-1. Simmons came right back in the top of the eighth to launch his second homer of the game, a two-run shot that made it 5-1.
The Cubs scored one run in the bottom of the eighth, but Craig Kimbrel slammed the door shut in the ninth inning to close out the win.
