Series Recap: Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Kevin C. Cox

Atlanta continued their hot play at home, winning two of three from the visiting Phillies. The Braves had no answer for Cole Hamels, who threw a complete game in the opener, besting Julio Teheran.

While the Braves won the next two, we were all struck with news following the opening game of the unfortunate passing of Ronald Lee Homer Jr., a fan who plummeted 85 ft. to his death while waiting out a rain delay when he fell over a safety railing in the upper deck of Turner Field.

On to the two wins, Kris Medlen had himself another good start to push his W-L record to 10-10 on the season. He allowed just one run in seven innings of work. Also, Brandon Beachy earned his first ever win against the Phillies, going six innings and giving up just two runs on Domonic Brown's home run.

Jason Heyward continues to hit like a beast in the leadoff spot, garnering six hits including his first ever leadoff home run in the series. Heyward is now hitting .404 in August with a 1.131 OPS, and is hitting .371 in 18 games batting first. He already has 12 RBI in the leadoff spot, while having all of 20 RBI in 62 games batting second.

Chris Johnson also had a productive series with four hits and six RBI, including his ninth home run of the season on Tuesday. Justin Upton had four hits to raise his batting average to .271; Johnson still leads the NL in hitting at .337.

Freddie Freeman had two hits and an RBI. The RBI moved him into a tie for fourth in the NL with 80.

Dan Uggla was placed on the DL during the series for a LASIK eye procedure. Tyler Pastornicky was recalled and had a couple of hits, but he suffered a left knee sprain when he collided with Jason Heyward while trying to catch a pop-up.

Paul Janish broke a 27-at-bat hitless streak with a single in the third inning on Wednesday. He even showed his humanitarian side, helping a downed bat off the field.
