Beachy dominates, Braves homer three times in 5-0 win over Miami

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta had been waiting for Brandon Beachy to become himself again after Tommy John surgery. Friday night in Atlanta, he did just that. The 26-year old right-hander threw eight shutout innings, striking out six Marlins while allowing just three hits and one walk.

Beachy, who again used his slider minimally, accrued 11 whiffs on 99 pitches, with his fastball and changeup accumulating five each.

The Braves' offense continued to sizzle, and got going in the first inning. With one out in the bottom of the first, Justin Upton launched a Jacob Turner fastball into the left field seats for his 22nd homer of the season. Up 1-0, Freddie Freeman singled and Brian McCann reached on an error to bring Chris Johnson to the plate, who promptly connected on his eighth homer of the season to make it an early 4-0 game in favor of Atlanta.

McCann added another run to the lead in the bottom of the third, smashing his 17th homer of the season to center field to  make it a 5-0 game.

Turner left after the fifth inning, finishing with a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, and 5 K. Scott Downs and Luis Ayala teamed up to pitch the ninth inning for Atlanta, sealing the Braves' 14th straight win and Miami's sixth straight loss.
