Series Preview: Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins

Marc Serota

The Braves look to put the Marlins in their place in a three-game series at Miami. The Marlins will be returning home after having just been swept in St. Louis, but they have won 11 of their last 15 home games to improve their home record to 18-24.

Conspicuous by his absence is Ricky Nolasco, who was scheduled to start the opening game of the series before being traded to the Dodgers. In return, the Marlins received three minor-league pitchers.

Atlanta swept the Marlins in Miami back in April, but Miami is hitting .281 in the team's last 15 home games with nine home runs. Giancarlo Stanton has hit six home runs in just 20 games at home with a .315 avg. and 1.035 OPS while last Wednesday's villain, Justin Ruggiano, hasn't hit a single one and is hitting just .206 in his home ballpark. No one else on the Marlins team has more than two home runs at home this year. Stanton also leads the team with 16 home RBI followed by Jeff Mathis (!) with 14 and Marcell Ozuna's 13.

As for their pitching, the Marlins team ERA in those 15 games is 3.80, just slightly below the team's overall home ERA of 3.82. That means the Marlins have been winning at home primarily with the bats. That doesn't bode well for Atlanta's recent struggles on the road, whose team ERA is a full 1.4 runs higher on the road than at home (2.57 home, 3.97 away). Conversely, Atlanta has won 17 of the last 21 meetings with the Marlins in Miami, so the chances are good that the Braves can turn their fortune around and end the road trip on a high note, and hopefully with a fatter lead in the division, before heading into the final home series before the All-Star Break.
