Braves tally 19 hits in 13-4 rout of Philadelphia

USA TODAY Sports

Tim Hudson hasn't received much run support at times this season, but Atlanta's bats made sure that wasn't an issue tonight as the Braves pounded out 19 hits (including three home runs) in a 13-4 drubbing of the Phillies. Atlanta scored runs in seven of the nine innings to back up Hudson, who scattered five hits and one run in seven strong innings.

Andrelton Simmons got the scoring going in the first inning against Kyle Kendrick with a lead-off homer to make it 1-0. Dan Uggla added a two-run shot in the second inning to up Atlanta's advantage to 3-0. The Phillies plated their only run against Hudson in the third inning as Jimmy Rollins' bloop single to center fell in, bringing home Ben Revere.

After that, it was all Braves. Justin Upton made it a 4-1 game with a two-run RBI single in the fourth inning, then Chris Johnson and Tim Hudson both notched RBI's in the fifth inning to make it 6-1. Kendrick left after the fifth, with a rough line of 5 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.

Johnson struck again in the seventh inning with another RBI groundout before Jason Heyward launched a three-run homer into the right field seats to break things open even more at 10-1. It was a big night for Heyward, who had two hits to go along with a stolen base and a diving catch in right field.

A sacrifice fly from Uggla and run scoring hits from Andrelton Simmons and Reed Johnson finally ended Atlanta's. Alex Wood pitched the eighth inning and gave up one run on a sacrifice fly. David Carpenter allowed a two-run homer to Michael Young in the ninth before finishing things up in the ninth.
