Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/4

Scott Cunningham

Cory Rasmus had a solid night, but it wasn't him that was called up to replace the demoted Cory Gearrin.

Charlotte 6, Gwinnett 3

  • Todd Cunningham: 0-for-4, 2 K
  • Luis Nunez: 2-for-4, 3B
  • Phil Gosselin: 1-for-3, BB
  • Omar Poveda: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K
  • Wirfin Obispo: 1 IP, 2 BB, 1 K
  • Ryan Buchter: 2 IP, 2 R, 3 K
  • Cory Rasmus: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K

A three-run sixth inning was the deciding factor in this one. A 61-minute rain delay forced both starters out early, so that's why Poveda only went 4 innings. The rest of the bullpen was hit-or-miss with some control issues for Obispo, some runs given up by Buchter, and a solid performance by Rasmus. Luis Ayala will be called up and is hopefully over the anxiety issues from earlier this season, and Cory Gearrin will be the one losing his spot.

Mississippi 1, Birmingham 0

  • Christian Bethancourt: 1-for-2, BB
  • Tommy La Stella: 0-for-4
  • Robby Hefflinger: 0-for-4
  • Edward Salcedo: 0-for-3
  • Mitch Atkins: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 3 K

Atkins was able to scatter seven hits over his 7 innings, and the Braves scored a run in the ninth due to some sketchy defense by the Barons - an error and a passed ball. Scott Snodgress did well against the Braves, throwing 8 shutout innings and taking a no-hitter into the sixth. There wasn't a lot of offense in this one, but Bethancourt continues to show some signs of life with the stick. Here's to a big second half from the young catcher.

Frederick 8, Lynchburg 3

  • Matt Lipka: 0-for-3
  • Levi Hyams: 0-for-4
  • Josh Elander: 1-for-4
  • Kyle Kubitza: 1-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI
  • Elmer Reyes: 1-for-3, 2B
  • Blaine Sims: 5 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 5 K
  • Matt Chaffee: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K

Frederick jumped all over Blaine Sims and the Hillcats, scoring all 8 runs in 5 consecutive innings. There wasn't a whole lot of offense from here, either, as the Hillcats mustered 7 hits off of Brady Wager and Zach Fowler. Kyle Kubitza continues his good work, and he remains one of the better sleeper prospects, especially in position players, that the Braves have in the organization. Matt Chaffee is another from the relief perspective.

Rome - Postponed due to rain

Danville 3, Pulaski 2

  • Connor Lien: 0-for-4, BB
  • Johan Camargo: 2-for-5
  • Victor Caratini: 1-for-4, BB
  • Bryan De La Rosa: 2-for-3, 2B, BB
  • Blake Brown: 1-for-2, 2 BB
  • Justin Black: 1-for-3, 2B, BB, SB
  • Michael Flores: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K

There are several young, toolsy players on this roster. Justin Black oozes athleticism, and he gave an example of what that could look like if he puts it all together. Bryan De La Rosa is known for his defense behind the plate, but a .294/.351/.353 is a nice start to the season. Victor Carratini has slowed down, but he's still doing fairly well. Michael Flores is a young lefty making his stateside debut, and while he is almost 20, there's some real potential there.
