We hardly got to know Luis Ayala before he hit the disabled list with an anxiety disorder. Ayala returning does provide the Braves with a bit more depth and with Cory Gearrin's inconsistencies over the past few weeks, hopefully a bit more reliability as well.
Ayala fits in with what the Braves have seemingly been trying to do on the mound for the past few years. By that I mean that he hardly walks any batters but also has a low strikeout rate. Ayala will rely on the defense behind him to perform at a high level while forcing hitters into weak contact.
The Braves will still probably be looking for relief help at the deadline and Ayala should not be expected to be a top tier set up man ala Jonny Venters or Eric O'Flaherty, but he is an upgrade over Gearrin. It is good to have Ayala back and hopefully his anxiety issues are behind him.
