Braves place Reed Johnson on disabled list, call up Todd Cunningham

US PRESSWIRE

No, Todd Cunningham is not 16 years old like his picture might suggest.

About an hour after the Braves walked off against Colorado with a 9-8 win, the club announced yet another roster move.

Todd Cunningham will be called up to Atlanta on Tuesday to replace Reed Johnson, who will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left achilles. Johnson appeared to injure himself while busting it down the line during Sunday's win over the Cardinals.

Cunningham, 24, is a switch-hitting outfielder who has been with the Braves since the club selected him in the second round of the 2010 Draft. In 98 games with Gwinnett this season, he's hit .283/.362/.357 with two home runs and 18 stolen bases.

Cunningham's two best skills are getting on base and then stealing them. He's swiped 42 bags since the beginning of the 2012 season, making him one of the top base runners in the organization. He's not going to hit for power at all; in over 1,500 professional at-bats, he's hit nine homers.

It's tough to imagine Cunningham getting more than a handful of plate appearances while he's up in Atlanta, but if he impresses, he should get another shot once the rosters expand in September. Welcome to the show, kid.
