Gwinnett was able to get to Rays’ top prospect Jake Ordozzi Tuesday Night, taking a 4-1 win. The lineup put up four runs on nine hits and one walk. Tyler Pastornicky had two more hits playing SS, bringing his Triple-A OBP to .353. Ernesto Mejia blasted his 21st double of the season, now totaling 48 extra base hits in 2013. Yohan Flande made the start for Gwinnett, going six innings giving up one run (unearned), before handing off the lead to Joe Bimel and Cory Rasmus who picked up the save. He didn’t have much success with the big club, but his future is still promising – he has a 1.77 ERA, .163 opp. avg. and 47:21 strikeout-to-walk in Gwinnett.

  • Christian Bethancourt C: 2-4, BB, R
  • Tommy La Stella 2B: 2-4, 2B (10), 2R

Mississippi finally got back on the field and mustered up an impressive 15 hits and five walks Tuesday night, an 8-3 route of Pensacola. The stop six spots in the lineup each had multi-hit nights, including Mycal Jones with three. Christian Bethancourt reached three of his five times (including a walk) at the plate pushing his OBP above the .300 mark. He has now reached base safely in his past 22 games, a very impressive and encouraging stretch. Tommy LaStella, TC's 16th ranked prospect, also roped out two hits including a double pushing his 2013 OBP to .439 in 50 games. Aaron Northcraft got things done on the pitching side of things, going 6+ innings, giving up one run on four hits, pushing his 2013 ERA to under four.

Mississippi Player Stats

Myrtle Beach Pelicans 10, Lynchburg Hillcats 2

  • Matt Lipka CF: 2-5, 2B (24), R
  • Josh Elander LF: 1-3, BB
  • Trenton Moses 1B: 1-3
  • Kyle Kubitza 3B: 0-4, E (19)
  • Will Skinner DH: 1-4, 2B (14)
  • AJ Holland: 3IP, 5H, 2ER, 4BB, 3K
  • Brandon Cundiff: 2.2IP, 6H, 3ER, BB, 5K

Lynchburg got worked Tuesday night, taking a 10-2 beat down from Myrtle Beach, getting out-hit 10-2. Offensively, Matt Lipka wet 2-5 with two doubles, his 23rd and 24th of the season. Lipka has a decent .277 average, but it is paired with an unimpressive .319 OBP because of his lack of ability to draw walks. As a reminder, he is still the youngest player on the Lynchburg roster (only 1992-born player). Josh Elander also reached base twice on a single and a walk. Elander has been an odd case since being bumped up to Lynchburg. The OBP has remained high and he has improved his BB/K, but the power has been missing, sporting a .071 ISO since the promotion. The Lynchurg pitchers got rocked around, letting batters reach 22 times, leading to 10 runs.

Lynchburg Player Stats

Lakewood BlueClaws 3, Rome Braves 5

  • Kyle Wren CF: 1-3, BB, R, SB (13)
  • Eric Garcia SS: 1-3, 2BB
  • Edison Sanchez 1B: 1-3, 2B (11), 2BB, 2R
  • Carlos Franco 3B: 2-3, BB, R
  • Daniel Carroll LF: 2-3, 2B (2), BB
  • Lucas Sims: 6IP, 4H, 0ER, 2BB, 6K
  • Jeremy Fitzgerald: IP, 0H, 0ER, 0BB, K
  • Alex Wilson 2IP, 2H, 3ER, BB, K

Rome got ahead early, scoring five runs in the first four innings and was able to hold off Lakewood’s late 9th inning rally to take the win, 5-3. TC’s third ranked prospect Lucas Sims went six innings, giving up no runs on four hits and two walks. He also added six strikeouts, giving him 83 in 77.1 innings. It was a nice bounce back from his two previous outings. I guess now is a good time to get to the Kyle Wren portion of the program – he stole home Tuesday, actually a double steal according to the Rome recap. I didn’t see it and haven’t been able to track down the video, but I’ll post it if one surfaces. Aside from that, he went 1-3 with a walk, upping his OBP to .426 in 2013 (remember, he is 22 playing in Low-A). Eric Garcia reached base in three of his four times at the plate in place of the injured Jose Peraza.

Rome Player Stats

Bluefield Blue Jays 5, Danville Braves 1

  • Connor Lien CF: 2-4
  • Johan Camargo SS: 2-3, R
  • Victor Caratini 3B: 0-3, BB

  • Matt Marksbrery: 3IP, H, ER, BB, 5K
  • Ryan Gunther: 2IP, H, 0ER, BB, K

Danville got behind early and couldn’t recover, losing 5-1 Tuesday. Jorge Montenegro had a disastrous outing, walking five batters (no strikeouts) in four innings, giving up four runs. Control has plagued the 22-year-old all season to the point where he now has a 19:22 strikeout-to-walk in 25.1 innings pitched. Matt Marksberry followed up with an impressive three innings, striking out five. At the plate, Connor Lien and Johan Camargo each had multi-hit games. Victor Caratini ended his hitting streak, but still reached base via walk.
