McCann to replace Freeman in All-Star Game

Scott Cunningham

Seventh selection in eight full seasons for Braves catcher

Bruce Bochy has selected Brian McCann to replace Freddie Freeman in the 2013 All-Star Game. McCann previously has six appearances and was the All-Star MVP in the 2010 game.

McCann has hit .291/.374/.536 with 12 home runs since missing the first month of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Bochy hinted that he would choose McCann because he hadn't forgotten that, thanks to him, the Giants had home-field advantage in their 2010 World Series win.

Freeman will still travel to New York with Kimbrel and McCann to participate in All-Star Week activities despite his inability to play.
