Series Recap: Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins

#votefreddie - USA TODAY Sports

Unlike the series in April, Atlanta couldn't pull off a sweep of the Marlins in their home ballpark. Still, the Braves took two out of three in winning their first series on the road since May.

Atlanta needed 14 innings to win the first game. The score was tied 1-1 after six innings, and 24 straight Braves hitters were retired before breaking through with six runs on four hits in the 14th. The Braves improved to 7-4 in extra innings with the win, and the game was the longest extra-inning contest for Atlanta this year.

Julio Teheran fell behind early in the second game, but the offense behind him, led by Justin Upton, came from behind to win 6-4. Upton had three hits including his 16th home run of the season and first since June 12. He and brother B.J. had five of Atlanta's 11 hits in the game.

Atlanta's offense couldn't do much against Jacob Turner in the series finale, mustering just four hits, three of them being doubles, and two runs. Paul Maholm walked five in 4.1 innings and clearly didn't have his best stuff. All four runs he allowed scored in the first inning when he had to throw 37 of his 103 pitches.

Justin and B.J. Upton combined for eight hits in the series; B.J.'s sacrifice fly in the 6-4 win was his first RBI since June 29. Hopefully, this series gets both of them back on track offensively.

Andrelton Simmons was 0-7 in the first game and 1-12 in the series without a walk. He has just two hits in his last 16 at-bats and has but three walks since June 19. Get him out of the leadoff spot NOW.

Freddie Freeman had exactly one hit in each game of the series and has recorded hits in 13 of his last 14 games with eight extra-base hits. Remember, #votefreddie for the All-Star Game! Thursday's the last day!

Chris Johnson had himself a good series as well. He was 5-13 in the series and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Going back even further, Johnson has hits in 18 of his last 20 games.

Atlanta finished the road trip 3-3 and now sits five games up on Washington with four to go before the All-Star Break.
