Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 7/9

Stephen Dunn

Brandon Beachy rehabs while Jarrett Miller and Michael Flores toss gems.

Norfolk Tides 4, Gwinnett Braves 3

  • Stefan Gartrell, DH: 3-5, 2 2B, 2 K - .263
  • Ernesto Mejia, 1B: 2-5, HR(22) - .252
  • Alden Carrithers, 3B: 3-4, 2B, R, SB(6) - .323
  • Phil Gosselin, 2B: 1-3, RBI, SB(1) - .261
  • Brandon Beachy, SP: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Omar Poveda, RP: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K - 3.36 ERA
Brandon Beachy made his first rehab start since shutting things down last month, and everything went smoothly according to sources. Beachy looked good for the most part, and all his pitches were crisp. Results don't really matter at this point, you're just happy to see he felt ok. Omar Poveda closed out the game for Gwinnett by tossing the other 6 innings after Beachy hit his innings limit for the day. The G-Braves, despite outhitting the Tides, were only able to scrape 3 runs across. 1 of those came on Ernesto Mejia's 22nd home run of the year.

Carolina Mudcats 0, Lynchburg Hillcats 4
  • Matt Lipka, CF: 2-5, 2 R, 2 K - .286
  • Josh Elander, LF: 2-4, 2 RBI, K - .226
  • David Rohm, DH: 2-4, RBI, 2 K - .300
  • Jarrett Miller, SP: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K - 3.51 ERA
  • Carlos Perez, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - 0.00 ERA
The big story out of Lynchburg last night was Jarrett Miller, who 1-hit the Mudcats for 7 innings en route to his 6th win of the year. Miller allowed a single in the first inning and that was the only hit Carolina would muster all evening. Miller only struck out 4, so it wasn't like he was blowing guys away, however. Carlos Perez worked a perfect 8th in his debut with the Hillcats, having been promoted a few days prior. Matt Lipka went 2-5 leading off and is continuing to show more life with the bat - a highly encouraging sign for the Braves' former first round pick.

Rome Braves 3, Lakewood BlueClaws 5
  • Jose Pereza, SS: 2-5, 2 RBI, SB(31), .273
  • Chase Anselment, DH: 2-4, 3B - .277
  • Williams Perez, SP: 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 3 K - 4.24 ERA
  • Zach Jadofsky, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 4.07 ERA
It was a rough game for Rome and starter Williams Perez last night. Perez got hit early and often, giving up 5 run in 4 innings of work. Perez was really hittable today (8 hits allowed in 4 innings) and also wild (walked 3), a deadly combination. The Rome 'pen put together 5 shutout innings of relief, but the R-Braves' offense just couldn't quite close the gap. Jose Pereza continued to flash his excellent speed, swiping his 31st bag of the year. Pereza leads all Braves' minor leaguers in steals.

Danville Braves 7, Bristol White Sox 3
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 4-5, 2B, 3B, RBI, R -.293
  • Victor Caratini, 3B: 2-4, R, RBI, BB - .339
  • Bryan De La Rosa, DH: 2-5, RBI, R - .280
  • Blake Brown, RF: 2-4, 2B, BB, R, RBI, OF Assist - .300
  • Michael Flores, SP: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K - 3.78 ERA
Danville rapped out 16 hits last night, but the story of the game was actually Michael Flores. Danville's young hurler tossed a gem, allowing only 1 hit to the Bristol White Sox across 6 shutout innings. Flores whiffed 7 men while walking only two en route to his first win of the year. Danville's offense was excellent again in support of Flores, with Johan Camargo leading the way. Camargo fell a homer short of the cycle, while Victor Caratini, Bryan De La Rosa, and Blake Brown each chipped in a pair of hits as well.

GCL Astros 4, GCL Braves 6
  • Victor Reyes, LF: 2-3, 2 R, BB - .364
  • Tanner Murphy, C: 2-3, 2 RBI - .429
  • Fernelys Sanchez, RF: 1-3, BB, RBI, R - .205
  • Oriel L Caicedo, SP: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R(1 ER), 0 BB, 1 K - 2.08 ERA
Another game, another excellent start turned in by a Braves' farmhand. This time it was Oriel Caicedo's turn, as he threw 5 innings of 3 hit ball. He only managed to strike out one, but he didn't walk anyone and got plenty of weak contact. Victor Reyes continued his assault on the GCL league, reaching base 3 times and raising his average to .364. Braves' 2013 4th round pick Tanner Murphy continues to rake too, posting another multi-hit game.
