Gwinnett split an abbreviated doubleheader (both games were 7 innings) with the Syracuse Chiefs last night. The G-Braves took game one convincingly, as Cody Martin delivered another gem in his 2nd AAA start. Martin hurled a 7 inning complete game, allowing only 1 run, actually raising his AAA ERA to 0.64 in the process. He walked 1 and struck out 6, and now sports a 13/2 K/BB ration in 14 innings of AAA work. Joey Terdoslavich kept raking, putting up another three hit game, including two doubles. Todd Cunningham chipped in with 3 singles as well, while Stefan Gartrell hit his 3rd home run. In the nightcap, the G-Braves went quietly, as they basically started their "B" lineup. Phil Gosselin, who was promoted to Gwinnett yesterday afternoon, started and went 1-3 in his AAA debut.
Birmingham Barons 1, Mississippi Braves 4
- Edward Salcedo, 3B: 2-3, 3B, R, 3 RBI, K - .266/.332/.437
- Omar Luna, DH: 2-3, R, BB, K - .187/.207/.216
- Jaime Perdoza, SS: 1-3, RBI - .288/.352/.361
- Aaron Northcraft, SP: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K - 3.86 ERA
- Juan Jaime, RP: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K - 1.23 ERA
Mississippi beat Birmingham behind a big hit from Edward Salcedo yesterday. The Braves' top 3B prospect had an excellent day at the plate, going 2-3 with a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning. That triple brought the young hitter's slugging percentage up to .447, his highest season mark so far. In every season in the minors, Salcedo has improved his slugging (.333 to .396 to .412 to .447), and it appears the results may be finally starting to show. Salcedo's triple backed another strong outing by Aaron Northcraft, who went 6 innings and only allowed 1 run. Northcraft only allowed four hits, but also walked three man. He also struck out four. Juan Jaime continued his great season by whiffing 4 in 2 hitless innings. According to M-Braves radio man Kyle Tait, Jaime was hitting 100 MPH(!) on the gun.
Winston-Salem Dash 9, Lynchburg Hillcats 2
- Kyle Kubitza, 3B: 2-4, R, K - .284/.400/.495
- Elmer Reyes, SS: 1-4, 2 RBI, K - .298/.324/.425
- Matt Lipka, CF: 1-4, K - .279/.321/.407
- Blaine Sims, SP: 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 7 K - 7.07 ERA
- Brandon Cunniff, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - 0.00 ERA
In the rubber match, Lynchburg was obliterated by Winston-Salem. The Dash pounded Blaine Sims for 6 runs in 5 innings, though he did manage to strike out 7 men. The Hillcats offense couldn't really get anything going, with both runs coming courtesy of an Elmer Reyes RBI single. Kyle Kubitza was the only Hillcat to record a multi-hit game. Brandon Cunniff, signed recently out of the Independent League, made his first appearance for Lynchburg: a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Charleston RiverDogs 5, Rome Braves 4
- Jose Pereza, SS: 2-6, 3B, R, K, SB(22) - .268/.316/.349
- Casey Kalenkosky, C: 3-6, 2B, R, K - .239/.325/.451
- Blake Brown, CF: 1-4, BB - .205/.283/.313
- Mauricio Cabrera, SP: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K - 4.74 ERA
- Eric Pfisterer, RP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K - 1.42 ERA
Rome dropped a close game in extras to Charleston last night. Mauricio Cabrera started for the R-Braves, and had Rome well on the way to a win until the bullpen blew it. Cabrera went 4 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while whiffing 6 men. Eric Pfisterer was strong in long relief too, allowing 1 run over 3 innings and whiffing 6 as well. Jose Pereza had two hits, including a triple, and swiped his 22nd bag of the year. The R-Braves' young shortstop looks to be hitting up, as he's hit .293 in his last 10 games.
Danville Braves 4, Johnson City Cardinals 5
- Kyle Wren, CF: 1-4, SB(2)
- Mikey Reynolds, SS: 1-4, HR(1)
- Victor Caratini, 3B: 0-3, 2 BB, R, 2 K
- Bryan De La Rosa, DH: 1-5, 2 K
- Jorge Montenegro, SP: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 2 K
- Ryan Gunther, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
- Andrew Waszak, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Danville also dropped an extra inning game last night, losing 5-4 to the Cardinals' rookie ball team. After I wrote two weeks ago that Braves' 5th round pick Mikey Reynolds had almost no power to speak of, he - of course - blasted a home run for his first professional hit. Reynolds was 1-4 in his debut. Kyle Wren went 1-4 atop the Danville order and swiped his second bag in as many days. Victor Caratini went hitless in 5 PAs, but did manage to draw a pair of walks.
