Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/21

Robby Hefflinger just keeps hitting home runs - Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Joey Terdoslavich had a perfect day at the plate, Robby Hefflinger took the Carolina League lead in homers, and Michael Flores had a stellar start for Danville.

Syracuse Chiefs 4, Gwinnett Braves 8

  • Joey Terdoslavich, RF: 4-4, 2B, 3 R, RBI - .314/.349/.558
  • Ernesto Mejia, 1B: 1-4, HR(18), 2 RBI, 2 K - .252/.339/.539
  • Alden Carrithers, 3B: 3-4, 2B, R - .344/.427/.469
  • Joe Bisenius, SP: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R(3 ER), 2 BB, 6 K - 4.76 ERA
  • Wirfin Obispo, RP: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K - 3.38 ERA
The G-Braves smashed the Nationals' AAA affiliate tonight with an 8-run, 12-hit outburst. Joey Terdoslavich led the way for Gwinnett, going a perfect 4-4 with three singles, a double, RBI, and three runs. He also played the outfield, and it appears the Braves are trying to get him as much time playing both corner outfield spots as possible. Ernesto Mejia only had one hit, but made it count, cranking his 18th homer of the year. His 18 jacks are good for second in the International League (behind former G-Brave Mauro Gomez's 19.) Alden Carrithers also had himself quite a game hitting behind Mejia, as he rapped out 3 hits, including a double. Joe Bisenius started and picked up his first win on the year with 5.2 innings of unsurprising work. Old friend Danny Espinosa, played and batted second for Syracuse. He went 0-5 with 2 strikeouts, and is currently hitting .100 in the minors.

Birmingham Barons 5, Mississippi Braves 1
  • Myke Jones, CF: 2-3, BB - .219/.310/.301
  • Christian Marrero, DH: 1-4, 2B, RBI, BB, K - .241/.398/.405
  • Christian Bethancourt, C: 1-3, BB - .245/.265/.333
  • Ian Thomas, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K - 2.70 ERA
  • Andrew Russell, RP: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K - 3.18 ERA
Mississippi had a forgettable game last night, as the M-Braves could only manage one run against the Barons. The light-hitting Myke Jones was the only player who managed a multi-hit game, reaching base 3 times on two singles and a walk. Christian Bethancourt reached base twice with a single and a walk; the walk was his fourth in 41 games. That's not a misprint. On the pitching side, Ian Thomas also had a forgettable start, walking 4 in 3 innings of work.

Winston-Salem Dash 4, Lynchburg Hillcats 5
  • Robby Hefflinger, DH: 1-4, HR(19), 2 RBI, K - .293/.344/.587
  • Will Skinner, LF: 2-3, HR(13), 2 RBI - .215/.248/.544
  • Shawn McGill, C: 1-3, BB, R, K - .289/.389/.421
  • Ryan Weber, SP: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K - 3.42 ERA
  • Greg Ross, RP: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K - 3.75 ERA
The Hillcats slipped past the Dash last night thanks to an impressive power display. Robby Hefflinger - who won the Carolina League Home Run Derby during the All Star Break - hit his Carolina-Leauge-leading 19th home run of the year, and Will Skinner added a two run blast of his own to push the Hillcats to victory. Ryan Weber started for the Hillcats and threw 5 innings of 4 run baseball. He allowed 2 home runs, but also struck out six men. Greg Ross pitched the final four frames of the game - in what appeared to be a double start - and was magnificent. Ross only allowed 1 hit and 1 walk across his 4 frames, while striking out 4. He also picked up the win, his 4th of the year.

Charleston RiverDogs 5, Rome Braves 1
  • Carlos Franco, 3B: 2-4, 2B, 2 K - .232/.312/.299
  • Josh Elander, LF: 1-4 - .312/.375/.546
  • Frank Lafreniere, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K - 5.35 ERA
  • Alex Wilson, RP: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K - 1.99 ERA
A rough game for Rome last night, as they managed only 4 hits while allowing a whopping 13. Carlos Franco accounted for half of Rome's hits, while Josh Elander chipped in one as well. Elander has been in a bit of a slump of late, but is still hitting .312 with a K/BB ratio of 56/27. In 69 games this year, the Braves 2012 6th round pick has 22 doubles, 3 triples, and 11 home runs. One has to figure a promotion to Lynchburg may be coming sooner rather than later.

Princeton Rays 2, Danville Braves 3
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 2-4
  • Kyle Wren, CF: 0-3, R, BB, RBI
  • Victor Caratini, DH: 0-3, RBI
  • Justin Black, LF: 1-4, RBI, 2 K
  • Michael Flores, SP: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
Danville's offense came back down to earth on Friday, but the pitching just kept going. Michael Flores, who was signed as an international free agent last year, turned in a dominant start, whiffing a whopping 9 men over 5 innings of shutout baseball. Flores shredded the DSL last year, and if he can continue that success stateside, he could turn some heads. Kyle Wren and Victor Caratini both took 0-fers after their awesome debuts on Thursday. Justin Black drove in the winning run with a walk off single in the 9th inning, his first hit of the year.

GCL Astros 3, GCL Braves 4
  • Victor Reyes, LF: 2-4, 2B, RBI, BB, SB(1)
  • Ian Hagenmiller, 3B: 1-3, RBI, R, 2 BB
  • Cody Livesay, CF: 1-5, R, K, OF Assist
  • Cristhian Martinez, SP: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
  • Gary Moran, RP: 2.0 IP,1 H, 1 R(0 ER), 0 BB, 4 K
The GCL Braves kicked off their season in style, winning on a walk-off wild pitch in the 10th inning. Ian Hagenmiller drew his second walk of the day in the 10th, took second and then third on a throwing error, then scored on the wild pitch. That's GCL baseball for you though - both teams combined for *seven* errors. In his professional debut, Hagenmiller was 1-3 with a two walks, an RBI, and the game-winning run. Victor Reyes had himself a day as well, going 2-4 with a single, double and stolen base. Cristhian Martinez and Gary Moran each made 2 inning rehab appearances, and both posted almost identical lines. They each allowed 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, and struck out 4.
