Braves Walk It Off, 6-5

Kevin C. Cox

Sergio Romo's uncharacteristic wildness and a Joaquin Arias error lead to Braves comeback win.

It didn't start out looking like it would end like this.

Mike Minor started the game, and from his 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R line, you might think he had an off-day. After giving up two legitimate runs in the 3rd, Hunter Pence began the frustrating offense from the Giants by blooping an RBI single to right, making it 3-1 Giants. Two innings later, Minor got Tony Abreu to hit into an inning-ending double-play, but Andrelton Simmons uncharacteristically booted the ball. All runners were safe, and Buster Posey walked up to the plate. Falling behind 2-0, Minor threw a fastball over the heart of the plate that Posey nailed off the center field wall, bringing the score to 5-2 Giants.

Then things began to change. Chad Gaudin had somehow avoided trouble for most of the day, but he allowed a double to Brian McCann to lead off the 6th inning. He then promptly surrendered a two-run shot to B.J. Upton - his second of the day - to bring the score to 5-4 Giants. The Braves' bullpen held the Giants from there, bringing us to the bottom of the 9th and Sergio Romo.

Romo started off the inning by striking out Ramiro Pena - pinch-hitting for Chris Johnson - on a nasty backdoor slider. Evan Gattis came in to pinch-hit, and Romo would walk him. Andrelton Simmons came to the plate, and having already gone 0-for-4 with a GIDP, things looked a little bleak when he rolled over on a ball to third. Joaquin Arias, however, gifted the Braves another chance by failing to field the grounder, allowing all runners to be safe. Jason Heyward followed with a single to load the bases for Justin Upton. Justin took a few tough pitches and worked it to a 3-2 count, and when Romo's 3-2 slider didn't quite make it back to the plate, Upton walked in the tying run.

At that point, the game was basically over as Freddie "Of Course I'll Get A Hit Here" Freeman walked to the plate and shot a fastball into right field for the game-winning single.
