Game Thread 6/14: Giants at Braves

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

The Braves and Kris Medlen kick off their 8-game home-stand against Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants.

1. Andrelton Simmons - SS
2. Jason Heyward - RF
3. Justin Upton - LF
4. Freddie Freeman - 1B
5. Brian McCann
6. B.J. Upton - CF
7. Dan Uggla - 2B
8. Chris Johnson - 3B
9. Kris Medlen - P

The Braves have currently played the fewest home games of any NL team at 28, and they have a .750 winning percentage when they play at Turner Field.

Starting on the hill tonight is Kris Medlen. Medlen hasn't been quite as dominant as he was late last season, but after a semi-rough start to the season, he's been excellent over his last three non-injury-shortened starts - 19.2 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 2 BB, and 21 K. As Beachy gets closer to returning, Medlen has been making quite the argument to remain in the rotation.

Madison Bumgarner

(Sorry for the issues. I'll get my *&^% straight eventually)

Scouting Report: Madison Bumgarner has an odd delivery. He has a weird arm action, and he throws across his body, which is especially difficult for lefties. Bumgarner throws about 50% fastballs, but he'll rely heavily on his slider as well to hitters on both sides of the plate. The only real change on RHH vs. LHH is the use of his change-up, which he will rarely throw to lefties.

Analysis: Bumgarner is one of the better pitchers in the National League. An above-average strikeout rate (K%) of 23% goes along nicely with his walk rate (BB%) of 7% (average is about 8%). His walk rate is a bit up from previous years, but that will likely smooth itself out over the course of the season. The lefty's ERA of 3.58 is a little north of where he usually is, but his peripherals and FIP (Fielding-Independent Pitching) suggest he should lower that moving forward as long as he pitches similarly to how he has so far.
