Series Recap: Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres

#tipyourcap - Denis Poroy

This was certainly a disappointing series. Atlanta appeared to have the advantage pitching-wise against three middling starters, but the Braves suffered a three-game sweep to the Padres. This road trip marks the end of 20 straight days of games and come home with a 2-5 record in L.A. and San Diego. One would've expected the Braves to win at least one game if not two.

There were some bright spots, however. Both Jason Heyward and Justin Upton had five hits in the series; Heyward hit a pair of home runs in the first game and extended his hitting streak to 10 games to raise his June batting average to .370, and Justin Upton hit his first home run since his May 17th grand slam in the series finale. Upton's two RBI in the finale were his first since May 25, which was also the date of his previous extra-base hit before game one of the series.

B.J. Upton continued to show signs of improvement; he had two hits and only struck out twice in the three games. He almost hit a game-tying home run in the 3-2 loss Tuesday. B.J. now has eight walks this month with still half the month left; he drew seven walks all of May and nine in April.

We out-hit them in all 3 games. Nevertheless, we lost all 3....but our guys busted their ass every single night. -Fredi Gonzalez

Evan Gattis hit his fourth pinch-hit home run in the series opener and is now 6-for-8 off the bench with 11 RBI. No other team has more than three total pinch-hit homers.

Andrelton Simmons was 2-for-15 in the series, and further solidifies the notion that he simply isn't a leadoff hitter. He's had more success lower in the order, most often batting second where he has a .326 OBP.

Atlanta's offense as a whole was just 4-for-21 RISP and left 19 runners on base. For San Diego, they were 7-for-18 RISP with 11 LOB.

All the Braves starters took the loss in their respective starts, but Tim Hudson pitched the best of the three and remains winless since May 5.
