The Braves trailed from the start of the game, but battled back in the ninth only to fall short by a final score of 7-6 to the Padres.
Julio Teheran wouldn't flirt with a no-hitter this time around. Alexi Amarista tripled with one out in the first and scored on Chase Headley's groundout. In the second inning, Teheran served up a home run to Logan Forsythe, filling in for the injured Jedd Gyorko, to fall behind 2-0. Teheran would be victimized again in the fourth, this time by Braves nemesis Will Venable, on a three-run homer to make the score 5-0.
Atlanta's offense, meanwhile, was having quite some trouble against Jason Marquis. The former Braves pitcher walked four in 7.2 innings, but only gave up only two runs: in the fifth inning on Teheran's RBI groundout and a home run in the eighth by Jason Heyward.
Cory Gearrin relieved Teheran for the seventh and ran into immediate trouble. A double for Venable and a walk to Forsythe to start the inning led to two more San Diego runs: Venable scored on Yasmani Grandal's single to center and Forsythe scored on a double play. These two runs would later prove to be very crucial.
San Diego led 7-2 into the ninth, but singles by Dan Uggla and Chris Johnson to start the ninth set the stage for yet another pinch-hit home run for Evan Gattis, cutting the lead to 7-5. One out later, Jason Heyward hit his second homer of the game, but Justin Upton struck out looking to end it.
