Now Chipper Jones Can Rip On Umpires

USA TODAY Sports

Major League Baseball players can be fined for publicly criticizing umpires, but not former players. Thus Chipper Jones finds himself in the enviable position of being able to voice his displeasure with calls. Oh, and he has a Twitter account.

By now everyone has probably seen the botched home run call in last night's A's - Indians game. (Read about it here.) Basically, they reviewed a home run call that the replay clearly showed was a home run, and they got it wrong. The umpire was Angel Hernandez. He's terrible at calling plays, both live plays and plays he has time to review.

So Chipper used his Twitter power thusly:

Pure awesome Chipper. Is it possible to be more of Chipper Jones fan now than when he was a player? Because I think I am. His Twitter account has been pretty insanely awesome since its creation a year ago.

Someone like Chipper, if not Chipper himself, would be a good addition to the MLB Commissioner's Office as an assistant to the Commissioner. A recently retired player who is well respected among the other players, and someone who can be another public face of the office. It seems like a greater voice representing players in the Commissioner's Office would benefit everyone.
