Atlanta's bats fail to show up in 3-0 shutout loss to Toronto

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta's bullpen fired seven shutout innings in relief of starter Kris Medlen, but it was all for naught as the Braves' bats managed just four hits against four Blue Jays pitchers.

Starting his first game since 2011, Esmil Rogers allowed three hits while walking two Atlanta hitters in his 3.1 innings of work, but struck out four and was able to hold the Braves scoreless despite five baserunners. Left-handed reliever Juan Perez brought his visually painful delivery and his big moving fastball in relief of Rogers, and he struck out four batters in 2.2 innings of work.

Before leaving after two innings due to being struck by a line drive by Emilio Bonifacio, Medlen allowed a run in the first inning on a force out that brought in Melky Cabrera, who led off the inning with a single. Toronto plated two more runs in the second when Cabrera singled to left field, scoring Bonifacio and Munenori Kawasaki to make it a 3-0 game.

After Perez's perfect outing in relief of Rogers, Neil Wagner allowed just one hit while striking out two batters in two innings of work. Casey Janssen followed and struck out one batter en route to recording his 11th save of the season.

The Braves got quality work out of David Carpenter, Anthony Varvaro, Jordan Walden, and Cory Gearrin. Due to the high usage of the bullpen tonight, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team would have to discuss bringing up a seventh reliever.
