Tim Hudson's struggles continue as Toronto tops Atlanta 9-3

Tom Szczerbowski

For the third time out of his five May starts this month, Atlanta Braves right-hander Tim Hudson allowed five earned runs or more in an outing. This time, he allowed six earned runs in six innings of work as the Blue Jays got to him for eight hits, including two home runs.

The scoring for the home team started in the bottom of the second, as Adam Lind continued his assault on right-handed pitchers by lining a double to left field to begin the inning. After a groundout, Colby Rasmus connected with his eighth home run of the season, this one a shot to right field to make it 2-0 Blue Jays.

Toronto got right to it in the bottom of the third, as a walk to our old friend Melky Cabrera and a double by Jose Bautista put runners on second and third for Edwin Encarnacion, who smacked a two-run single up the middle to up the Blue Jays' advantage to 4-0.

Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle held Atlanta scoreless until the the top of the fifth inning when Andrelton Simmons dropped in a single to center field that brought home Chris Johnson and made it a 4-1 game.

That would be as close as the game got thanks to a two-run homer in the sixth inning by catcher J.P. Arencibia that made it a 6-1 game and officially put it out of reach. Reliever Cory Rasmus entered the game in place of Hudson to begin the bottom of the seventh, and Rasmus was greeted rudely. He allowed a ground-rule double to Cabrera and a walk to Bautista before Encarnacion launched a towering home run into the left field seats to make it a 9-1 game.

Evan Gattis connected for his 11th home run of the season in the eighth inning, a two-run blast that ended the scoring at 9-3.
